How to Set Up and Use Fall Detection on the Apple Watch
The Apple Watch has become an essential piece of technology for many, not only for its fitness tracking and communication features but also for its health and safety functions like fall detection. Fall detection is a potentially life-saving feature that can alert emergency services and your contacts if you’ve taken a hard fall and can’t get up. Here’s how to set it up and use it on your Apple Watch.
Setting Up Fall Detection
1. Ensure your Apple Watch is updated: Before you start, make sure you’re running the latest version of watchOS on your Apple Watch. Check for any software updates in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone by going to ‘My Watch’ tab > ‘General’ > ‘Software Update’.
2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone: Fall detection is toggled on through the paired iPhone. Make sure your iPhone is connected to your watch.
3. Go to the My Watch tab: Once you’re in the app, select the ‘My Watch’ tab at the bottom of the screen.
4. Tap on ‘Emergency SOS’: Scroll down until you find ‘Emergency SOS’ and tap it.
5. Enable Fall Detection: In this menu, you’ll see a toggle for Fall Detection. If you’re 55 years or older, this feature is turned on by default; if not, you can manually enable it by swiping the toggle button.
6. Choose the response setting: After turning on Fall Detection, you’ll need to decide if you want it to automatically call emergency services when a fall is detected, assuming after a fall you’re immobile for about a minute.
Using Fall Detection
– When a fall is detected: If your Apple Watch detects something that looks like a hard fall while you’re wearing it, it will tap you on the wrist, sound an alarm, and display an alert.
– If you’re OK:
– You can dismiss the alert by pressing the digital crown, tapping ‘I’m OK’, or choosing ‘Dismiss’ in the alert after confirming that you didn’t fall or don’t need assistance.
– If you need help:
– You can use the slider to call emergency services.
– If your watch detects movement after a fall but you haven’t responded after about 15 seconds, it will try again with louder tones and wait for another 30 seconds.
– If there’s no response:
– After about one minute with no response from you (if motionless), your Apple Watch will automatically place a call to emergency services then send messages along with your location data to your emergency contacts explaining that your watch detected a hard fall and called emergency services.
– After an emergency call:
– The watch will display an end call button as well as show your Medical ID badge if that’s set up.
By having Fall Detection activated on your Apple Watch, not only do you have peace of mind knowing that help could be more readily available in case of an accident, especially if you’re alone, but loved ones can also feel reassured about your well-being while they are away. Setting up this feature takes just a few simple steps but may make all the difference when it counts.
