A well-prepared hamster cage can make for a comfortable and happy home for your furry friend. Follow these 15 steps to set up a hamster cage that meets all of your pet’s needs.

1. Choose the right cage: Opt for a spacious cage with enough room for your hamster to run, climb, and burrow. A minimum of 450 square inches of floor space is recommended.

2. Clean the cage thoroughly: Before placing your hamster in its new home, be sure to clean the cage with mild detergent and warm water. Rinse it well and allow it to air dry.

3. Select appropriate bedding: Pick bedding made from aspen shavings, cellulose, or paper fibers to create a cozy environment that is safe for hamsters.

4. Lay down the bedding: Spread the bedding evenly on the cage floor, giving it a thickness of about 2-3 inches for your pet’s comfort and burrowing activities.

5. Set up a nesting box: Provide your hamster with a hiding spot by placing a small box, ceramic hide, or wooden hideout somewhere inside the cage.

6. Add a wheel: Choose a solid-surfaced running wheel that is large enough for your hamster so that its back remains straight as it runs.

7. Place climbing toys: Vertical chews and ladders will encourage your hamster to stay active while also keeping its teeth in good condition.

8. Install food and water dispensers: Attach food bowls and water bottles at suitable heights within reach of your hamster to ensure easy access.

9. Introduce shelves or levels (optional): If you have selected a tiered cage, provide additional climbing surfaces by adding shelves or levels within the space.

10. Add tunnel systems (optional): Create an engaging maze by connecting tubes or pipes, allowing your pet to explore various sections of the cage.

11. Create a sand bath: Fill a small dish or corner of the cage with about an inch of sand to aid your hamster in cleaning and grooming.

12. Add chew toys: Supply wooden, sisal, or pumice toys for your hamster to gnaw on to keep their teeth healthy and trim.

13. Set up a litter box (optional): Place a small box filled with hamster-friendly litter in a corner of the cage, as it promotes good hygiene habits.

14. Double-check safety: Examine the setup for any sharp edges, exposed wires, or potential hazards that could injure your pet.

15. Introduce your hamster to its new habitat: Gradually acclimate your furry friend to its new home by allowing it to explore at its own pace while monitoring for any signs of stress.

By following these 15 steps, you’ll be well-prepared to offer your hamster a comfortable and enriching living space that caters to all of their physical and mental needs.
