4 Ways to Make a Cape
A cape has always been a symbol of power and strength, often associated with superheroes or legendary figures. Whether you’re looking to create a costume for Halloween, a cosplay event, or just for fun, a cape can add an extra touch of flair and intrigue. Here are four different ways to make a cape that will help you channel your inner superhero.
1. No-Sew Fleece Cape
Materials:
– Fleece fabric (2 yards for adults, 1 yard for children)- Scissors
– Ribbon or string
Instructions:
1. Lay the fleece fabric on a flat surface and fold it in half.
2. Measure the desired length of the cape on the folded edge and cut accordingly.
3. Round off the bottom corners of the fabric.
4. Along the top edge of the fabric, cut out two slits about 6 inches apart for the ribbon or string.
5. Thread the ribbon or string through each slit and tie securely around your shoulders.
2. Simple Sewn Cape
Materials:
– Fabric (preferably a slightly heavier material)
– Sewing machine or needle
– Thread
– Ribbon or string
Instructions:
1. Choose your desired fabric and measure out the length and width of the cape.
2. Fold over about an inch of fabric along the top edge and sew it down to create a casing for the ribbon/string.
3. Thread the ribbon or string through the casing and tie it securely around your shoulders.
4. You may also choose to add additional decorative elements such as patches or trim along the edges.
3. DIY Hooded Cape
Materials:
– Fabric (3 yards for adults, 2 yards for children)
– Sewing machine or needle
– Thread
– Pins
– Scissors
Instructions:
1. Measure out and cut both your cape fabric and hood fabric.
2. Hem the edges of the cape fabric, leaving an opening for the hood attachment.
3. Sew together the two hood fabric pieces, leaving the bottom open.
4. Attach the hood to the cape’s opening with pins and sew it in place.
5. Add a ribbon or string to fasten around your neck.
4. Convertible Wrap Cape
Materials:
– Fabric (preferably a soft, drapey material)
– Scissors
– Ribbon or string
Instructions:
1. Cut out a large square or rectangle piece of fabric (between 40-50 inches per side is suitable for adults).
2. To create armholes, fold your fabric in half and cut one slit at each corner of the fold, approximately 5-7 inches from the edge.
3. Round off the corners and add your desired finishing touches (fringe, tassels, etc.) along the edges.
4. Use a ribbon or string to secure around your waist or across your shoulders.
No matter which cape style you choose, these four methods will help bring out your inner superhero and add an extra element to any costume or outfit. Enjoy crafting your cape and let it inspire you to embrace your power!
