3 Ways to Make a Sling for Your Arm

A sling is an important tool used to support an injured arm or shoulder. It keeps the arm immobile, reducing the risk of further injury and promoting faster healing. If you’re in a situation where you need to create a sling for your arm, you might be wondering how to go about it. Fortunately, there are several ways you can make a homemade sling using everyday items. Here are three methods to craft a functional and supportive arm sling.

1. Using a Scarf or Bandana

One of the easiest and quickest ways to make a sling for your arm is by using a scarf or bandana. To do this, follow these simple steps:

1. Lay the scarf or bandana flat on a surface and fold it into a triangle.

2. Position your injured arm against your body and hold it at a right angle with your elbow bent.

3. Place the folded material under your arm so that the two ends cross over your shoulder on the uninjured side.

4. Tie the ends together behind your neck, making sure it’s secure and comfortable.

5. Adjust the height of the sling so that your forearm rests horizontally, parallel to the ground.

2. Using a Long-Sleeve Shirt

Another practical way to create a makeshift arm sling is by using a long-sleeve shirt or light sweater:

1. First, ensure that your injured arm is kept against your body with the elbow bent at 90 degrees.

2. Slip one sleeve of the shirt over the uninjured shoulder and allow it to dangle down in front.

3. Bring up the hanging end of the sleeve and tie it together with the other sleeve behind your neck.

4. You may need to adjust the shirt’s length by rolling or folding it until you achieve a comfortable fit.

3. Utilizing Duct Tape and a Pillow

In case you don’t have access to a scarf or a long-sleeve shirt, a small pillow and duct tape can also be used to create an improvised arm sling:

1. Rest your injured arm across the width of the small pillow, keeping the elbow at a 90-degree angle.

2. Wrap duct tape around the pillow to secure it in place, ensuring it doesn’t constrict blood flow or cause discomfort.

3. Create a loop or strap with the duct tape that you can wear around your neck and shoulder.

4. Finally, attach the duct tape loop to the wrapped pillow to form a secure sling for your arm.

When making any of these homemade slings, always ensure your injured arm is well-supported and comfortable. If your injury is severe or persistent pain occurs, consult a healthcare professional for proper treatment and advice. Remember that these DIY slings are only temporary solutions until proper medical attention can be received.
