How to Set Up a Gerbil Cage: 15 Steps

Step 1: Choose the right cage size

Select a cage that is spacious enough for your gerbils to move around and explore. A 20-gallon aquarium or a large wire cage with a secure lid is suitable for two gerbils.

Step 2: Provide a solid floor

Gerbils have tiny feet, so opting for a cage with a solid floor or base is ideal. Wire flooring can cause injuries to their feet.

Step 3: Avoid plastic cages

Gerbils love to chew, and plastic cages could be easily damaged. Opt for a glass or metal cage instead, as they are more durable and secure.

Step 4: Bedding material

A layer of safe bedding material like aspen shavings or paper-based substrate should be placed at the bottom of the cage. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, as they can cause respiratory issues.

Step 5: Burrowing material

Add soft materials such as hay or shredded paper for your gerbils to burrow in, as this is essential for their physical and mental wellbeing.

Step 6: Nest box

Include a nest box made of wood, ceramic, or other chew-safe materials for your gerbils to hide and rest in.

Step 7: Exercise wheel

Incorporate an appropriately sized exercise wheel for your gerbils to run on. A solid surface wheel is better than wire mesh wheels.

Step 8: Toys and entertainment

To prevent boredom, supply various toys such as cardboard tubes, wooden chew toys, or branches from safe trees (apple, willow).

Step 9: Water bottle

A drip-style water bottle should be attached to the side of the cage to provide constant access to clean water.

Step 10: Food bowl

Opt for grebil-safe food bowls such as ceramic dishes that are sturdy and difficult to overturn.

Step 11: Food mix

Supply a high-quality gerbil food mix containing seeds, grains, and dried vegetables. Include fresh vegetables periodically for additional nutrients.

Step 12: Regular cleaning

Clean the cage weekly by changing the bedding and burrowing material, and wipe down the surfaces with a mild pet-safe disinfectant.

Step 13: Location

Place the cage in a quiet area of your home, away from direct sunlight or drafts. A room temperature of around 68°F (20°C) is perfect for gerbils.

Step 14: Cage mates

Gerbils are social animals and do well in pairs. Make sure to introduce them properly to avoid any conflicts or aggression.

Step 15: Veterinarian check-ups

Schedule regular check-ups with your veterinarian to ensure your gerbils’ health is maintained and to address any potential health issues early.

Following these 15 steps will help you create a comfortable and engaging environment for your gerbils, ensuring they have a happy and healthy life.
