Introduction:

A well-seasoned steak can elevate a meal from ordinary to extraordinary. But what does it take to truly master the art of seasoning? With just a few simple steps, you can transform your steak into a culinary masterpiece. Below are 12 easy steps to guide you on how to season a steak perfectly every time.

1. Choose the right cut of steak:

Selecting the perfect cut of meat is crucial. Prime cuts like rib-eye, filet mignon, and New York strip are ideal choices for their tenderness and flavor.

2. Prepare your ingredients:

Before starting, gather all your seasoning ingredients. This usually includes kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, fresh garlic, and optionally, fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme.

3. Bring the steak to room temperature:

Remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to an hour. This helps ensure even cooking.

4. Dry the surface:

Pat your steak dry thoroughly with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. This step will create a better crust on the surface of your steak during cooking.

5. Add kosher salt:

Kosher salt is essential for seasoning steaks because its larger grains adhere better to the surface of the meat than fine table salt. Lightly sprinkle all sides of the steak with kosher salt.

6. Apply freshly ground black pepper:

Grind black pepper over all sides of the steak using even, gentle pressure with a pepper mill set on medium coarseness.

7. Press in minced garlic (optional):

For added flavor, press a thin layer of minced garlic onto the surface of the seasoned steak before cooking.

8. Use high-quality oil:

Choose a high smoke-point oil such as vegetable or grapeseed oil to coat the cooking surface before searing your steak.

9. Sear on high heat:

Heat a heavy pan or grill on high. When it’s very hot, place the seasoned steak on the cooking surface, leaving ample room between each piece. Sear for about 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare or 4-5 minutes for well-done.

10. Add fresh herbs (optional):

If using fresh herbs, add them during the last minute of cooking. Gently press the herbs onto the steak to create an aromatic crust.

11. Let the steak rest:

After cooking, let the steak rest on a cutting board or plate for about 5-10 minutes before serving. This helps redistribute the juices evenly throughout the meat.

12. Serve and enjoy:

Serve your perfectly seasoned and cooked steak with your favorite side dishes and a glass of red wine, if desired. Enjoy!

In conclusion, seasoning a steak is a simple yet crucial step that requires attentiveness and skill. By following these 12 steps, you can effortlessly create mouthwatering steaks that will impress your dinner guests and elevate any meal.
