How to Renew a Green Card: 6 Steps

Step 1: Determine Eligibility
Before beginning the renewal process, ensure you are eligible. Generally, permanent residents must renew their green cards every 10 years. Conditional permanent residents who receive a green card through marriage or investment should not use this process and instead apply for removal of conditions 90 days before their card expires.
Step 2: Prepare the Forms
Obtain Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card) online from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website or through the mail. Fill out all required fields, ensuring that your information is accurate and up to date.
Step 3: Gather Supporting Documentation
You’ll need to submit copies of supporting documents with your application. These include a copy of your current green card (both sides), any receipts for USCIS fees made in connection with this application, and two passport-sized photos taken within the last six months titled with your name and Alien Registration Number (A-Number). Additional documentation may be required depending on your circumstances.
Step 4: Pay the Appropriate Fees
Check the USCIS website for current fees related to green card renewal. You can submit payment in the form of a check or money order, or pay online using a credit card or bank account transfer. Make sure you’re aware of any additional biometrics fees if they apply to your case.
Step 5: Submit Your Application
Once you’ve completed Form I-90, gathered your supporting documents, and paid the fees, submit your application by mail following USCIS guidelines or online via the USCIS Electronic Immigration System (USCIS ELIS). Be sure to make copies of everything for your records.
Step 6: Attend Biometrics Appointment and Await Decision
After submitting your application, you’ll receive a notice for a biometrics appointment at a local Application Support Center. Attend this appointment to have your fingerprints, photo, and signature taken. Once the process is complete, wait for USCIS to review your application and make a decision. This process can take several months, so be patient.
