How to Reduce Highway Noise: 7 Steps

Dealing with highway noise can be a constant nuisance for homeowners living close to busy roads. Excessive noise can disrupt sleep, reduce concentration, and negatively impact our wellbeing. Here are seven steps you can take to reduce highway noise in your home.

1. Install Soundproof Windows: One of the most effective ways to tackle highway noise is by installing soundproof windows. These types of windows consist of double or triple glazing, with a vacuum or heavy gas layer between the panes. This greatly reduces the transfer of sound, allowing you to enjoy peace and quiet inside.

2. Plant Trees and Shrubs: Plants not only beautify your surroundings but also act as a natural sound barrier. Consider planting tree species like evergreens or shrubs with dense foliage close to your home’s boundary line. The plants will absorb the highway noise, making your outdoor environment more serene.

3. Use Soundproof Fencing: Building a fence around your property can help block out some highway noise. For best results, choose tall fencing materials such as concrete or brick. Alternatively, use noise-dampening panels that can be installed along an existing fence.

4. Invest in Window Treatments: Although not a full-proof solution, thick curtains and blinds can help dampen outdoor sounds. Opt for thermal-backed curtains or multi-layered fabrics that have increased noise reducing properties.

5. Add Insulation to Walls and Ceilings: Proper insulation not only keeps your home warm but also aids in sound absorption. Check your wall and ceiling insulation levels and consider adding extra layers where necessary.

6. Use White Noise Machines: While they may not reduce highway noise itself, white noise machines can help drown out unwanted sounds by creating a calming background ambiance within your home. By playing soft, soothing sounds, these devices mask the intrusion of external noises, helping you sleep better at night.

7. Create Interior Sound Barriers: Placing large pieces of furniture near the exterior walls closest to the highway can also help dampen noise transmission. Consider positioning bookcases, wardrobes, or sideboards in these areas to create added barriers between you and the outdoor din.

In conclusion, while it may be difficult to eliminate highway noise entirely, implementing these seven steps will go a long way in reducing its impact on your daily life. Not only will you enjoy a quieter home environment, but you’ll also improve your overall wellbeing.
