How to Put Out a Campfire: 10 Steps

A camping trip is incomplete without a warm, crackling campfire. It allows us to cook our meals, keep warm during chilly nights, and provides entertainment as we gather around it. However, putting out a campfire is as important as lighting it. Negligence can lead to wildfires that put both lives and property at risk. This article will outline 10 steps to help you safely and efficiently put out your campfire.

1. Prepare in advance: Select a level ground for the campfire, preferably away from trees or any flammable materials. Create your fire within a fire ring or fire pan.

2. Keep water and sand nearby: Before lighting the fire, ensure that you have water and sand easily accessible. In case of an emergency, they’ll be your saviors.

3. Burn small branches and twigs: Stick to kindling made up of thin branches or twigs, as larger logs take longer to extinguish.

4. Let the fire die down: After you’re done using the fire, stop feeding it and let it naturally die down until the flames subside.

5. Use water wisely: Pour water along the edges of the fire while gently stirring with a shovel or stick. Too much water all at once will create thick steam clouds that can be hazardous.

6. Keep mixing with a stick: While adding water, use a long stick or shovel to mix the ashes and embers until everything is soaked thoroughly.

7. Feel for heat: Carefully hold your hand near the ashes to check for heat without touching them. If you sense intense heat, repeat steps 5 and 6 until there’s no heat left.

8. Douse with sand or dirt: Once you’ve made sure there’s no heat coming from the ashes, sprinkle sand or dirt on top of them to suffocate any lingering embers completely.

9. Check the surrounding area: Examine the area near your fire pit to ensure that everything is free of heat or visible embers.

10. Pack out any remaining trash: Campfires are a significant source of litter left in the wilderness. Make sure you clear any soot, used aluminum foils, or leftover food scraps before leaving the site.

Remember, when leaving your campsite, it’s crucial to minimize your impact on nature and follow the Leave No Trace principles. By properly putting out your campfire and cleaning up the site, you are preserving our forest resources and ensuring a safe experience for yourself and future campers.
