Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin any electrical work, ensure that you are wearing appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and protective eyewear, and have a qualified electrician or utility representative on site.

Step 2: Turn Off Power

Switch off the main breaker in the electrical panel to shut down power to your entire property. This will prevent any electrical hazards while you work on the meter.

Step 3: Notify Your Utility Provider

Contact your utility provider and inform them that you will be pulling the electric meter. They may need to send a representative to assist or provide additional instructions.

Step 4: Locate the Electric Meter

Find your electric meter on your property. It is usually on an exterior wall, mounted on a metal box or pole.

Step 5: Remove the Meter’s Seal

Electric meters typically have a seal from the utility provider as a security measure. Carefully cut or remove this seal with pliers or a utility knife.

Step 6: Access the Meter Socket

Open the cover of the electric meter socket to reveal where the meter plugs into. Make sure there is no live electricity before proceeding.

Step 7: Disconnect the Meter

Carefully remove any additional seals or brackets holding the meter in place. Then, using insulated pliers, grasp both sides of the meter and gently wiggle it back and forth until it is free from the socket.

Step 8: Inspect the Socket

Once you’ve removed the electric meter, check for any signs of damage or corrosion within the meter socket. If there are issues present, contact your utility provider for assistance.

Step 9: Cover the Socket

Replace the socket cover immediately after removing the meter. This will protect it from accidental contact with live electrical components and make it clear that work is being done on that area.

Step 10: Perform Your Planned Work

With the electric meter removed, you can now complete any necessary work, such as meter replacement, or electrical upgrades.

Step 11: Reinstall the Meter

To reinstall the electric meter, align it with the meter socket and gently push it back into place. Ensure all clips, brackets, and seals are properly reattached.

Step 12: Restore Power and Notify Utility Provider

Turn on the main breaker to restore power to your property. Finally, contact your utility provider to inform them that the meter has been reinstalled and request a new seal if necessary.
