How To Preserve Decking – 5 Steps To Keep Your Backyard Deck Looking Its Best

Decking is an essential part of many backyards, providing a robust and elegant platform for outdoor activities, gatherings, or relaxation. However, exposure to the elements can take its toll on the wood, leading to deterioration over time if not properly maintained. Here, we outline five crucial steps to preserve your decking and keep it looking its best.

Step 1: Regular Cleaning

The first step in preserving your deck is to keep it clean. Remove dirt, leaves, and other debris by sweeping regularly. A deep clean using a specialized deck cleaner can remove built-up grime and mildew. Apply the cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse thoroughly with water.

Step 2: Repair and Replacement

Inspect your deck periodically for signs of wear or damage such as splintered boards, popped nails, or loose railings. Promptly replace broken or rotten planks and hammer in any protruding nails or screw them down to prevent injuries and further deterioration.

Step 3: Sanding

For wood decks showing signs of weathering—like splintered surfaces or rough patches—sanding is a solution that can rejuvenate the wood’s appearance. Sand along the grain of the wood using an appropriate grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface that’s more receptive to preservation treatments.

Step 4: Staining and Sealing

After cleaning and repairing your deck, apply a stain or sealant to protect the wood from moisture and UV rays. Choose a product based on your aesthetic preference (clear sealant vs. tinted stain), and make sure it has waterproofing properties. Use a brush or roller to apply an even coat and follow up with a second coat if necessary once the first layer has dried completely.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance

Consistent care is key to prolonging the life of your decking. This includes removing snow promptly in winter to avoid water damage as it melts, rearranging furniture occasionally to prevent marking, and trimming nearby bushes or trees that could scratch or dampen the wood surface.

With these five steps—cleaning, repair, sanding, staining/sealing, and ongoing maintenance—you can preserve the integrity and appearance of your decking for years to come. Taking time each year to perform these actions will help protect your investment and ensure your backyard deck remains a beautiful and functional extension of your living space.
