Power washing, also known as pressure washing, is an effective way to remove dirt, grime, and mildew from the exterior of your home. Here are 13 steps to help you power wash your house like a pro.

1. Gather the necessary equipment: Rent or purchase a power washer with a pressure rating of at least 2,500 PSI, along with extension wands, nozzles, and chemicals (such as detergent and bleach).

2. Pick the right time: Wait for a sunny day when temperatures are above 50°F (10°C) to ensure proper drying.

3. Clear the area: Remove any obstacles, such as furniture or vehicles, from around your house.

4. Protect outdoor items: Cover electrical outlets and outside faucets with plastic or aluminum foil to prevent water damage.

5. Safely set up the power washer: Connect it to a water source according to the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure you have proper grounding and GFCI protection.

6. Choose the appropriate nozzle: For most tasks, use a nozzle with a 25-40° spray angle.

7. Prepare the detergent: Mix detergent with water according to package directions, then fill your power washer’s soap dispenser.

8. Start at the top: Always work top-to-bottom, beginning with gutters and overhangs.

9. Maintain a safe distance: Keep the nozzle at least 12 inches from surfaces to avoid damaging paint or siding material.

10. Apply detergent first: When spraying on soap solution, work in sections of no more than 20 feet in length for even coverage.

11. Move on to rinsing: After applying detergent and allowing it to soak for several minutes, switch to clean water and rinse each section thoroughly.

12. Take extra care with windows and doors: Be cautious not to force water into gaps around window seals or doorframes.

13. Allow surfaces to dry: Wait 24 hours before moving any furniture back into place.

By following these thirteen steps, you can successfully power wash your house and enjoy a cleaner, fresher exterior.
