Opals are a beautiful gemstone prized for their vibrant play of colors, ranging from brilliant blues, greens, yellows, and reds. While polishing an opal can be done with the help of specialized machinery, doing it by hand can be a rewarding experience. Here’s how you can polish opals by hand in six simple steps.

1. Gather your materials

Before you begin polishing your opals, you’ll need to gather some essential supplies. You’ll require wet sandpaper in various grits (from 1000 to 3000), a rubber-backed sanding pad, a small bowl of water, and a clean cloth.

2. Prepare the opal

Examine the raw opal and identify any impurities or cracks that need to be removed before polishing. You may need to shape the stone at this stage to eliminate any imperfections or obtain a particular form.

3. Begin the sanding process

Soak the sandpaper in water and start with the roughest grit (1000). Wrap it around the rubber-backed sanding pad and gently rub it against the surface of the opal, following its contours. Ensure that you keep the surface wet throughout this process as it helps remove debris and prevent scratches.

4. Progress through finer grits

After thoroughly sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper, move on to finer-grained sandpapers (1200, 1500, and so on). Each pass with a higher grit should remove scratch marks made by the prior one while also smoothing out any remaining rough patches. Take your time using each grit level until reaching the finest (3000). Remember always to keep the working surface damp.

5. Check for imperfections

After completing the sanding process with 3000 grit paper, inspect your opal closely under proper lighting. Look out for any remaining scratches or flaws that might have been missed during polishing. If needed, you can go back to a coarser sandpaper and repeat the process.

6. Final polishing

To achieve a mirror-like finish, moisten a clean cloth with water and apply a small amount of cerium oxide or other opal polishing compound. Gently rub this mixture onto the surface of the opal in circular motions or along its curves until it gleams.
