Karuta is a traditional Japanese card game that tests players’ memory and reflexes. It has gained global recognition due to its inclusion in various anime and manga. If you’re interested in learning how to play Karuta, follow these 14 steps:

1. Gather your materials: To play Karuta, you’ll need a set of two decks – a reading deck (Yomifuda) containing phrase cards and a grabbing deck (Torifuda) with the corresponding image cards.

2. Begin by finding a partner to play with. Karuta is typically played one-on-one but can also be enjoyed in larger groups.

3. Designate a reader, who will not participate but will only read aloud the Yomifuda cards.

4. Sit facing your opponent on the floor or at a table with enough space to place the cards between you.

5. Shuffle the Torifuda deck and spread them out face-up between you and your opponent, ensuring they are accessible to both players.

6. Memorize the position of the cards – this is crucial for gaining an advantage during gameplay.

7. Shuffle the Yomifuda deck and give it to the reader.

8. The reader should start with reading traditional opening poems called “Jihai” or “Shuffle cards,” which are not found in either deck, signaling players to get ready for the game.

9. Now, the actual gameplay begins as the reader starts reading phrases from the Yomifuda deck one by one.

10. As soon as you recognize the phrase being read aloud, quickly locate its corresponding Torifuda card and swipe it away from your opponent.

11. If both players touch a card simultaneously, it’s considered a draw, and the card is taken out of play without being awarded to either player.

12. Continue playing until all of the cards have been swiped or removed from the playing area.

13. Count each player’s collected cards once the game ends. The player with the most collected cards wins the round.

14. Switch roles, and if desired, continue playing as many rounds as you like.

Remember, Karuta is a game that requires a healthy combination of memory, reflexes, and adaptive strategy. It may take time to become proficient, but with practice, you’ll be on your way! Enjoy playing Karuta with friends or family members while appreciating the rich cultural heritage of this fascinating Japanese card game.
