How to Pierce Your Own Tongue

Introduction:

Piercing your own tongue can be a bold, exciting personal statement and an expression of individuality. While it’s always recommended to have a professional perform body modifications, if you are determined to do it yourself, it’s crucial to follow the proper steps and prioritize safety. This article will guide you through the process of piercing your own tongue.

Disclaimer:

Before we proceed, it’s essential to understand that piercing any part of your body on your own poses significant risks such as infection, allergic reactions, incorrect placement, and other complications. It is always best to consult a professional piercer in case you decide to proceed with piercing your tongue.

Required Materials:

  1. Piercing needle (preferably 14-gauge) – sterilized
  2. Straight barbell jewelry – sterilized
  3. A disposable mouthwash containing no alcohol
  4. Latex or nitrile gloves
  5. Marker pen
  6. Antibacterial soap
  7. Sterile saline solution
  8. Ice cubes or ice pack
  9. Cotton swabs
  10. Rubber bands

Steps:

1. Research and Preparation:

Begin by researching the risks, healing process, and aftercare associated with tongue piercings. Acquire all the required materials listed above.

2. Hygiene and Sterilization:

Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds prior to putting on latex or nitrile gloves. Make sure your mouth is clean by using a disposable mouthwash and brushing your teeth.

3. Setup:

Find a clean, well-lit area where you can pierce your tongue safely without distractions.

4. Marking the Piercing Spot:

Stand in front of a mirror and check for any veins underneath your tongue using a flashlight or bright light source—avoid these veins when piercing your tongue. Carefully mark the spot where you want to pierce your tongue using a marker pen.

5. Applying Tension:

Wrap rubber bands around your tongue to stabilize it and apply tension. The pressure will help make the piercing process easier and reduce bleeding.

6. Numb the Area:

Suck on an ice cube or apply an ice pack to your tongue for a few minutes to numb the area and reduce pain during piercing.

7. Piercing:

Grasp the sterilized needle firmly and hold your tongue steady. Slowly push the needle through the marked piercing spot, making sure to avoid any veins. Ensure that the needle goes completely through your tongue.

8. Inserting the Jewelry:

Once the needle is through, slide the sterilized barbell directly into the hole behind the needle, following its path carefully. Fasten on the top ball securely.

9. Aftercare:

Rinse your mouth with an alcohol-free mouthwash after completing the piercing process. In addition, clean your piercing using a cotton swab dipped in sterile saline solution twice daily for at least two weeks.

10. Healing Process:

A normal healing time for tongue piercings is 6-8 weeks, but it may take longer depending on your body’s individual response.

Conclusion:

Piercing your own tongue requires careful consideration of safety and hygiene precautions. It’s always better to consult a professional piercer. If you decide to do it yourself, follow these steps closely and seek medical attention if you experience any signs of infection or complications during healing.
