Introduction:

Tayammum, an Islamic ritual performed as an alternative to Wudu (ablution), when water is scarce or not available. This dry ablution, practiced by Muslims worldwide, enables them to maintain a state of spiritual and physical cleanliness even in challenging circumstances. In this article, we will discuss the steps involved in performing Tayammum correctly.

Step 1: Intention (Niyyah)

The first step in performing Tayammum is making a conscious and deliberate intention to purify oneself. This internal resolve should be made before commencing the ritual, as it marks the beginning of the process. The intention does not need to be announced verbally; it is enough to hold it firmly in your mind and heart.

Step 2: Reciting the Basmalah

After setting the intention, recite the Basmalah by saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). This phrase serves as a reminder of Allah’s presence and affirms that all actions are performed for His sake.

Step 3: Finding Suitable Material

The next step is to locate suitable material for performing Tayammum. According to Islamic teachings, clean earth or dust can be used. If neither is available, substitute materials such as sand or stone can be used.

Step 4: Striking or Touching the Material

Once a suitable material has been found, strike both palms on it or place them firmly against its surface. This is symbolic of connecting with the earth and drawing purification from it.

Step 5: Rubbing the Face

After striking your hands on the material, gently rub both palms over your face once, ensuring that all areas are covered from forehead to chin and between fingertips and thumbs.

Step 6: Rubbing the Hands and Arms

Next, rub your left hand over your right forearm up to the elbow and then back down to the wrist. Repeat this process with your right hand on your left forearm but make sure not to rub your hands together.

Step 7: Reciting the Shahada

Conclude the Tayammum by reciting the Shahada (Testimony of Faith). This statement, “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah,” means “I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His messenger.”

Reviewing the Process:

To summarize, performing Tayammum involves setting an intention, reciting the Basmalah, finding a suitable material for purification, striking or touching the material, rubbing it over the face and arms, and finally reciting the Shahada.

Tayammum is a fundamental part of Islamic practice that ensures Muslims maintain cleanliness during times when access to water is limited or unavailable. By following these steps, you can fulfill your religious obligations under such circumstances.
