How to Measure a Dress: 14 Steps
Measuring a dress is a crucial task, especially when you’re shopping online or altering an existing garment. Follow these 14 simple steps to measure your dress accurately and ensure the perfect fit.
.Gather your materials: You will need a flexible measuring tape, a flat surface (such as a table), and a notepad to record the measurements.
.Lay the dress flat: Smooth out any wrinkles and ensure the dress is laying on its backside.
.Measure the bust: Locate the fullest part of the bust area. Stretch the measuring tape across from side seam to side seam, making sure it goes over the fullest part of this area. Record this measurement.
.Measure the waist: Find the narrowest point of the waist, which can often be found by folding the dress in half lengthwise. Measure from side seam to side seam at this point and record the measurement.
.Measure the hips: Locate the widest part of the hips, which is usually located about 8 inches down from the waistline. Stretch the measuring tape across from side seam to side seam at this point and record this measurement.
.Measure shoulder width: Find the shoulder seams where they meet at your neck and stretch across to where they end, just below your shoulders from one side to another. Record this measurement.
.Measure sleeve length: If your dress has sleeves, place one end of the tape measure on top of your shoulder seam and measure down to your wrist or desired sleeve length.
.Measure armhole circumference: Place your measuring tape around one armhole; go all around in a circle and note this number as well.
.Measure neckline circumference: Circle around your neck from where collarbone meets shoulder seam back to starting point.
.Measure front length: Begin at top shoulder close to neck; follow front of dress down over your body until it reaches the hemline. Remember to keep the tape measure straight!
.Measure back length: Begin at top shoulder close to neck; follow back center-line down across the dress until it reaches the hemline. Record this number as well.
.Measure skirt length: Fold your dress in half at waistline and measure distance between waist and hem.
.Check for additional details: Ensure you capture any specific measurements or features of your dress, such as pockets, pleats, or special detailing that may affect sizing.
.Record all measurements: Document each measurement on your notepad or digital device.
Remember that practice makes perfect, and measuring your dress accurately is critical for a perfect fit. Make sure you double-check all of your measurements before making any online orders or alterations. Happy measuring!
