Introduction

Sugar cookies are a timeless classic, loved by people of all ages. They are versatile – perfect for holiday celebrations, birthday parties, or just a regular day at home. Making sugar cookies from scratch is surprisingly simple and rewarding. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making delicious and attractive sugar cookies.

Ingredients Required

For the sugar cookie dough, you will need:

– 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 teaspoon baking soda

– 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

– 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

– 1 1/2 cups white sugar

– 1 egg

– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

– 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

– 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk

– Sprinkles or colored sugar for decoration (optional)

For the icing (optional), you will need:

– 2 cups powdered sugar

– 6 to 8 tablespoons milk or water

– 2 teaspoons corn syrup

– 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In another large bowl, cream together the softened butter and white sugar until smooth. Add in the egg and mix well. Then add the vanilla extract and almond extract if desired.

Gradually add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture while stirring. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time to soften the dough.

Once combined, divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least one hour.

Step 2: Preheat Oven and Prep Workspace

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of the chilled dough to approximately 1/4-inch thick.

Step 3: Cut and Decorate

Using cookie cutters or a knife, cut out your desired shapes and transfer them to the lined baking sheets.

If you want sprinkles or colored sugar on your cookies, gently press them into the surface of the dough before baking.

Step 4: Bake

Place the baking sheets with the cookies in the preheated oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until cookies are just starting to turn golden around the edges. Be careful not to overbake, as this will make them dry and hard.

Once baked, let the cookies rest on the baking sheets for a couple of minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Step 5: Prepare Icing (Optional)

If you wish to ice your cookies, combine powdered sugar, milk or water, corn syrup, and almond extract in a bowl to achieve a smooth consistency. Adjust the thickness of the icing by adding more powdered sugar or liquid as needed. You can also add food coloring if desired.

Step 6: Decorate with Icing

Once the cookies have cooled completely, use a spoon or piping bag to apply the icing in whatever pattern you like. Allow the icing to set before stacking or storing your cookies.

Conclusion

There you have it – a simple and satisfying recipe for homemade sugar cookies! By following these steps, even beginners can impress their friends and family with delightful baked treats for any occasion. So go ahead and give this recipe a try – we promise it will satisfy your sweet tooth!
