How to Make Shorts

Are you tired of searching for the perfect pair of shorts in retail stores? Why not make your own? Creating shorts not only allows you to customize the look and fit to your preference but also gives you an opportunity to practice your sewing skills. In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to make shorts.

Materials and Tools:

  1. A suitable fabric of your choice
  2. A pair of well-fitting shorts or a shorts pattern
  3. Sewing machine or needle & thread
  4. Scissors
  5. Pins
  6. Tailor’s chalk or fabric marker
  7. Measuring tape
  8. Iron (optional)

Step 1: Selecting the Fabric

Choose a comfortable and breathable fabric that is suitable for making shorts. Some popular options include cotton, linen, and denim. Consider the purpose of the shorts (casual wear, workout, etc.) and select an appropriate fabric accordingly.

Step 2: Measuring and Creating Patterns

Measure your waist, hips, and desired length of your shorts using a measuring tape, then add around half an inch for seam allowance. You can either use an existing pair of well-fitting shorts as a template or find a pattern online that matches your measurements.

Step 3: Cutting Out The Fabric

Fold your fabric in half with its right sides facing each other. Place your shorts or pattern on the fabric and trace around it with tailor’s chalk or a fabric marker, including the seam allowance.

Cut out the fabric pieces along the marked lines – you should have four identical pieces in total (two front sections and two back sections).

Step 4: Sewing The Panels Together

Place one front piece and one back piece together with their right sides facing each other. Pin along the curved edge (the crotch seam) and sew using a straight stitch, then repeat the process for the other pair.

Step 5: Sewing The Side Seams

Open the two newly-sewn panels and place them with their right sides facing each other, aligning them along their side edges. Pin the side seams and sew them together with a straight stitch.

Now your shorts should begin to take shape.

Step 6: Creating The Waistband

Fold the top edge of your shorts inwards about half an inch and press with an iron if necessary to create a crease. Fold it again, this time around 1-2 inches (depending on desired waistband thickness) to create a smooth waistband.

Pin in place and sew along the bottom edge of the folded waistband, leaving a small gap open to insert elastic (if desired).

Step 7: (Optional) Adding Elastic To The Waistband

Measure your waist and subtract 1-2 inches for a snug fit. Cut a piece of elastic with the derived length. Feed it through the waistband opening using a safety pin until it comes out the other end.

Sew both ends of the elastic together and close the gap in the waistband.

Step 8: Hemming The Shorts

Fold up the bottom edge of your shorts by around half an inch and press. Then fold it up once more, approximately one inch inwards, to create a smooth hemline. Pin in place and sew along the upper edge of the folded hem. Give your shorts one final press with an iron to ensure everything is neat.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your very own pair of shorts. Customize them further by adding pockets or decorative patches to truly express your personal style. Enjoy wearing your handmade shorts with pride!
