How to Make Rivels: 5 Steps

Rivels are small dumplings commonly used in soups or stews, particularly in Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. They are deceptively simple to make and add a tasty element to any meal. Follow these five easy steps to make rivels for your next dish.

1. Gather the ingredients

To make rivels, you will need the following ingredients:

– 1 cup all-purpose flour

– One large egg

– A pinch of salt

2. Mix the ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Stir it well to disperse the salt evenly. Next, crack the egg into the bowl and use a fork or your fingers to mix everything until it’s well combined. The dough should be crumbly and hold together when pinched.

3. Form the rivels

Using your fingers or a fork, start breaking up any large clumps of dough until you have pieces that are roughly the same size as little pebbles or large grains of rice. You can also use a pastry cutter if you have one, but using your fingers works just as well.

4. Prepare your soup or stew

To cook your rivels, start by making some soup or stew. Simply follow your favorite recipe until it reaches the point where it’s simmering – this is when you’ll add the rivels to cook them.

Examples of soups or stews to add rivels include chicken noodle soup, ham and bean soup, potato soup, or beef stew.

5. Cook the rivels

When your soup or stew is simmering, gently sprinkle the raw rivels into the pot while stirring to prevent them from sticking together. Continue to cook for about 10-15 minutes until rivels become tender and fully cooked.

Once all the rivels are cooked through, serve your delicious homemade meal! Rivels provide a perfect burst of texture to any dish and will undoubtedly become your favorite addition to soups and stews. Enjoy!
