How to Make Elephant Ears for a Costume

Creating unique and authentic costumes can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially when you’re able to put your crafting skills to the test. One such costume idea that requires a bit of creativity is an elephant costume. A key component of this costume is, without a doubt, the iconic elephant ears. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of making your own elephant ears for a costume.
Materials You’ll Need:
1. Gray or light brown felt fabric (or any fabric of your choice)
2. Scissors
3. Fabric glue or hot glue gun
4. Pen or pencil
5. Ruler or measuring tape
6. Elastic band or headband
7. Optional: Wire or pipe cleaners for added structure
Step 1: Draw Your Template
First, draw an outline of the desired elephant ear shape onto a piece of paper or cardboard. You can search for reference images online to guide you in creating the perfect shape. Aim for a large, flared silhouette with rounded edges to mimic an elephant’s distinctive ear.
Step 2: Cut Out the Fabric
Lay your felt fabric on a flat surface and place your template on top, then trace it using a pen or pencil. Once traced, use a pair of sharp scissors to carefully cut out two matching sets of fabric pieces (a total of four pieces) – these will form the front and back of each ear.
Step 3: Add Structure (Optional)
For added structure and stability, you can insert wire or pipe cleaners between the layers of fabric. Simply cut them to the same length as the outer edge of an ear and place them between the corresponding pieces before gluing.
Step 4: Glue Your Fabric Pieces
Using fabric glue or a hot glue gun, apply glue along one side of each pair of fabric pieces, being careful not to glue the wire or pipe cleaner if you chose to include it. Carefully align the edges and press the pieces together, allowing the glue to dry according to the instructions on the adhesive.
At this point, you should have two separate ears with matching front and back sides.
Step 5: Attach the Elastic Band or Headband
Before you attach your elephant ears to a headband or elastic band, measure the distance between where you want them to sit atop your head and cut your band accordingly. Then, apply fabric glue or hot glue to the base of each ear and affix it to the band. Hold them in place for a moment until they are securely attached and allow the glue to dry completely.
And there you have it! Your homemade elephant ears are now ready for action. Slip them on, and whichever outfit you choose to pair them with, your costume is sure to be a hit at any event. Enjoy your new elephant look!
