How to Make Cuban Coffee: 12 Steps

Cuban coffee, known as “café Cubano” or “cafecito,” is a bold and flavorful coffee-drinking experience, famous for its sweet taste and strong aroma. Here are 12 easy steps to help you make the perfect cup of Cuban coffee at home.
1. Gather your ingredients: You will need finely ground espresso coffee beans, sugar (white or brown), water, an espresso maker (the traditional stovetop Moka pot is recommended), a small saucepan, and a teaspoon.
2. Measure the coffee: For a standard six-cup Moka pot, use four tablespoons of finely ground espresso coffee. Adjust the amount depending on the size of your pot and desired strength.
3. Fill the bottom chamber of the Moka pot with water: Pour cold water up to the safety release valve.
4. Add coffee grounds to the filter: Spread the grounds evenly across the filter and ensure there are no clumps or loose edges. Do not tamp down the grounds.
5. Assemble the Moka pot: Screw on the top chamber securely but do not over-tighten.
6. Heat the Moka pot: Place it on medium heat on a stovetop burner. Be patient–good coffee takes time.
7. Prepare sugar mixture: While waiting for your coffee to brew, measure out one tablespoon of sugar per serving into a small saucepan or heatproof container.
8. Watch for brewed espresso: Once you see that thick, dark liquid start flowing into the top chamber of your Moka pot, mix two tablespoons of brewed espresso with your sugar (amount will change if more servings are made) in your small saucepan or container.
9. Create espuma (coffee foam): On low heat or by using elbow grease, quickly blend the two tablespoons of espresso with sugar using a spoon until you get a thick, golden paste called espuma.
10. Pour the remaining espresso: Once all the espresso has been brewed, carefully pour it over the sugar and espuma mixture for each serving, stir gently to combine.
11. Serve immediately: Cuban coffee is best enjoyed steaming hot. Pour the finished coffee into small demitasse cups.
12. Enjoy! Savor the rich taste and aroma of your homemade Cuban coffee alongside a tasty breakfast or dessert – or simply on its own.
Creating the perfect cup of Cuban coffee may take some practice, but with these 12 steps as your guide, you’re well on your way to mastering this traditional brewing method. Enjoy!
