Crate shelves are an affordable, versatile and stylish storage solution for any room. Their rustic and industrial appearance can add character to your living space while providing practical storage options. In this article, we will guide you through 15 steps on how to make your own crate shelves.

1. Gather materials: To get started, you will need wooden crates, a tape measure, sandpaper, a level, wood stain or paint, a paintbrush or cloth, brackets and screws, a power drill, and wall anchors (if needed).

2. Choose your crates: Select sturdy wooden crates of similar size and style to ensure uniformity across your shelves.

3. Measure the space: Determine the area on your wall where you would like your crate shelves to be installed.

4. Clean the crates: Wipe down each crate with a cloth to remove dust and debris.

5. Sand the crates: Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or uneven surfaces.

6. Stain or paint the crates: Apply your chosen finish to the crates using either wood stain or paint. Allow it to dry completely.

7. Plan the layout: Arrange your crates on the floor or against your wall in a pattern that suits your needs and preferences.

8. Mark the wall: Use a pencil and level to mark where each crate will be placed, ensuring that they are level and aligned correctly.

9. Attach brackets: Depending on the weight of your crates, you may need to install brackets for added support. If necessary, attach brackets along the marked lines on the wall using a power drill and screws.

10. Drill pilot holes: Drill pilot holes into each crate at their desired mounting points to avoid splitting the wood when attaching them to the wall.

11. Customize the shelf (optional): If you want additional functionality for your shelves, consider adding hooks or rails for hanging items.

12. Install wall anchors: If your crates are heavy or if you’re installing your shelves on a drywall, it might be necessary to use wall anchors for additional support.

13. Attach the crates: Secure each crate to the wall by aligning the pilot holes with the brackets or wall anchors and fastening them using screws.

14. Adjust if needed: Use a level to ensure that your shelves are straight and adjust them accordingly if required.

15. Style your shelves: Add your desired items to your new crate shelves and enjoy your functional and stylish storage solution.

In just 15 easy steps, you have created unique crate shelves to enhance the aesthetics of your living space while providing practical storage. Customize your design further by experimenting with different patterns and arrangements, or even stacking crates on top of each other for a more interesting look.
