How to Make Baskets

Baskets have been used for centuries to hold and transport items, from freshly picked fruits and vegetables to essentials during travel. They come in various shapes and sizes, serving both functional and decorative purposes. Making your own basket can be a rewarding and enjoyable craft that anyone can learn. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of creating your very own DIY basket.

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. Basket weaving materials (e.g., reed, willow, cane, or raffia)
  2. A flat surface for weaving
  3. Scissors or a sharp knife
  4. A ruler or measuring tape
  5. Water and a container for soaking the weaving materials
  6. (Optional) Basket mold, clothespins, or clamps

Step 1: Choose Your Weaving Material

Select your preferred basket weaving material. Reed, willow, cane, and raffia are common choices due to their natural flexibility and availability. Each material offers different textures and aesthetics, so consider the finishing look you want when selecting one.

Step 2: Soak the Weaving Material

Soak your chosen material in water for about 30 minutes to an hour until it becomes pliable. This will make it easier to work with during the weaving process. Keep your container of water nearby; you may need to periodically wet the material as you weave.

Step 3: Prepare the Spokes (or Uprights)

Spokes serve as the structural frame of the basket. Cut an even number of spokes (usually between eight and twelve) according to your desired height and width of the basket.

Step 4: Prepare the Weavers (or Horizontal Strands)

Cut several long strands from your weaving material; these will be woven around the spokes to form the basket’s body. The required length depends on how large your basket will be – it’s better to cut longer strands, as you can always trim off excess.

Step 5: Create the Basket Base

Lay half of your spokes flat on a surface, spaced evenly apart. Then, place the remaining spokes perpendicularly across them to create a woven grid pattern. The intersection points will become the corners of your basket’s base.

Using a single weaver strand, start weaving around the spokes in an over-under pattern from one corner to another. As you weave, keep the tension consistent and ensure the strands are close together to create a sturdy base. Trim off any excess weavers or tuck them into the base.

Step 6: Bend Spokes Upward

Once your base is complete, gently bend each spoke upward at a right angle toward the grid intersection. You are now ready to weave the sides of your basket.

Step 7: Weave the Basket Sides

Continue weaving around the now-upright spokes using the same over-under pattern as in step 5. Each rotation around the basket is called a “round.” Build up layers of rounds to form the walls of your basket.

Optional: If you have difficulty holding the spokes upright while weaving, use a basket mold, clothespins, or clamps for support during this step.

Step 8: Complete Your Basket

As you reach your desired height, finish off the final round by trimming and tucking in any excess weavers into previous rounds for a polished look. You can get creative with your finishing touches by adding decorative braids or borders to personalize your basket further.

Step 9: Allow Your Basket to Dry

Allow your completed basket to dry completely before using it. Depending on the material and size of your basket, this can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days.
