How to Make an Elizabethan Ruff

The Elizabethan ruff is an iconic fashion piece from the 16th century, worn by both men and women as a symbol of elegance and status. It is a large, ornate collar consisting of pleated fabric that encircles the wearer’s neck, creating a dramatic effect. If you’re interested in historical fashion or just looking for a unique accessory for a costume party, creating your own Elizabethan ruff can be a fun and rewarding project. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step.

Materials you’ll need:

Lightweight fabric (linen, cotton, or organza)

2. Stiffening agent (starch, glue or commercially available fabric stiffener)

3. Wide ribbon or trim for edging (optional)

4. Needle and thread

5. Scissors

6. Measuring tape

7. Pins

8. An iron

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Fabric

Start by measuring your neck circumference and then multiply this measurement by three; this will give you the length of fabric needed for your ruff. Determine how wide you want your ruff to be – typically between 3 to 6 inches – and add an extra inch for the seam allowance.

Once you’ve determined your measurements, cut a strip of fabric accordingly.

Step 2: Prepare the Fabric

Using the stiffening agent of your choice, thoroughly saturate the fabric strip; this will help hold its shape once pleated. Follow the instructions on your particular stiffener product for best results. Allow the fabric to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Hemming and Edging (Optional)

Hemming the edges of your fabric strip will give it a more polished look while also preventing fraying. Fold over approximately half an inch along each edge of the strip, and sew it down using a straight stitch.

Optionally, you can sew a decorative trim or ribbon along the edge of the fabric. This helps add visual interest to your ruff and hides the seam created in the hemming process.

Step 4: Create the Pleats

Start by folding your fabric strip accordion-style into small pleats, approximately half an inch wide each. Use pins to secure each pleat in place as your work. Continue folding until you’ve created pleats along the entire length of the fabric.

Step 5: Press and Secure the Pleats

With your iron set to a low heat setting, carefully press the pleated fabric to further define and set the folds. Remove pins after pressing each pleat.

Using a needle and thread, sew along the bottom edge of your pleated fabric strip to secure all pleats together permanently. Use small, even stitches and try to keep them hidden within the folds.

Step 6: Attach Ruff to a Band or Ribbon

Measure your neck circumference once again and cut a piece of ribbon just slightly longer than this measurement. Sew one end of your pleated ruff to one end of the ribbon and continue attaching it by sewing through both layers along their entire length. Finish by sewing together or attaching hooks to both ends of the ribbon so it can be fastened around your neck.

With these steps complete, you now have an elegant Elizabethan ruff ready for wear at your next Renaissance faire, historical reenactment, or costume event. Enjoy showing off this iconic piece of fashion history!
