How to Make a Tote Bag: 15 Steps
A tote bag is a stylish and versatile accessory that can be used for various purposes, from carrying groceries to holding everyday essentials. If you’re interested in making your own customized tote bag, simply follow these 15 steps:
.Choose your fabric: Select a material like canvas, denim, or heavy cotton, which will provide durability and structure.
.Gather your supplies: You’ll need fabric scissors, pins, a sewing machine, a pencil or fabric marker, and a measuring tape.
.Determine the size of your tote bag: Measure the desired width and height, adding 2-3 inches for seam allowances.
.Cut out the fabric: Cut two pieces of fabric according to the measurements you’ve determined.
.Mark and cut the handle pieces: Decide on the length and width of your tote handles and cut out two strips of fabric accordingly.
.Fold and press the handle pieces: With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, fold each strip in half lengthwise and press with an iron. Then fold the edges towards the center and press again.
.Sew the tote handles: Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew along the open edge of each handle piece to close it up.
.Pin the handles to the main fabric pieces: Position each handle at equal distances from the top edge and side edges on both main fabric pieces, ensuring they’re not twisted.
.Secure the handles with basting stitches: Before sewing everything together, use long temporary hand stitches (basting) to hold your handles in place.
.Pin your fabric pieces together with right sides facing: This ensures that all seams will be hidden inside once completed.
.Sew around three sides of the bag: Start at one top corner, sew down one side across the bottom then up to the other top corner, leaving one short side open.
.Create the tote’s box shape: To achieve the boxed bottom, fold the bottom corners to form triangles, then stitch perpendicular to the base seam, a few inches in. Trim any excess fabric.
.Zigzag stitch or use a serger for edges: Protect the raw edges from fraying by either using a zigzag stitch or a serger if available.
.Turn your tote bag right side out: Gently push out each corner and straighten the bag so that every seam is neatly aligned.
.Press and topstitch the top edge: Fold in the raw edges of the open side, press with an iron, then sew along the top edge to close it up and give your tote bag a polished finish.
Congratulations! You’ve now successfully made your very own tote bag. Customize your creation with embroidery or appliques for added flair and enjoy your one-of-a-kind accessory.
