A pillow sham is a decorative pillowcase that adds an extra touch of style and elegance to your bed. They come in various designs and can be made from a wide range of fabrics. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of making your own pillow sham using simple materials and tools.

Materials needed:

  1. Fabric (for pillow front and back)
  2. Sewing machine
  3. Measuring tape
  4. Scissors
  5. Pins
  6. Thread
  7. Iron
  8. Optional: trim, buttons, or other decorative accessories

Step 1: Choose Your Fabric

Select the fabric you want for the front and back of your pillow sham. Consider using complementary colors or patterns for a harmonious look.

Step 2: Measure Your Pillow

Measure the dimensions of your pillow, adding an extra inch to each side for seam allowances. For example, if the pillow size is 18×18 inches, cut the fabric pieces to be 19×19 inches.

Step 3: Cut Your Fabric

Using the measurements from step 2, cut two fabric squares that will become the front and back of your pillow sham.

Step 4: Decorate the Front (Optional)

If desired, add decorative elements such as trim or buttons to the front piece of fabric before sewing it together with the back piece.

Step 5: Pin and Sew Your Fabric

Pin the right sides of your front and back fabrics together while ensuring any decorations are facing inward. Sew around three edges of the square with a straight stitch, leaving one side open to insert your pillow.

Step 6: Trim Seam Allowances (Optional)

Trim any excess seam allowances to prevent bulkiness at corners when turning your sham right side out.

Step 7: Turn Right Side Out and Press

Turn your pillow sham right side out through the open side, making sure to carefully push out the corners. Iron the sham to smooth out any wrinkles and create a crisp finished look.

Step 8: Insert Your Pillow

Insert your pillow into the sham, ensuring it fits snugly within the case.

Step 9: Close the Open Side

Fold in the raw edges of the open side and pin them closed. Sew along this edge to close it securely.

Step 10: Enjoy Your New Pillow Sham!

Place your completed pillow sham on your bed and enjoy adding a personal touch to your bedroom decor.

Creating a pillow sham is a simple and cost-effective way to update your room’s style, and it’s easy enough for DIY enthusiasts of all skill levels. With just a few materials and some basic sewing skills, you can make your own beautiful pillow sham to showcase on your bed. Happy crafting!
