Kusudama flowers, a beautiful origami design originating from Japan, have become increasingly popular as home decor, gifts, and even wedding decorations. These elegant paper flowers can be made from various types of paper including traditional origami paper, colorful cardstock, or even upcycled magazine pages. In this article, we will learn how to make your very own kusudama flower using simple step-by-step instructions.
Materials Needed:
– 5 squares of paper (preferably 3×3 inches or larger)
– Glue (a glue stick or liquid glue is fine)
– Scissors (optional for cutting paper)
Step 1: Create the Base Folds
Start by laying one square of paper on a flat surface with the color side down. First, fold it in half diagonally to form a triangle. Unfold it and repeat folding diagonally in the opposite direction. You should now have an X-shaped crease on the paper.
Step 2: Fold the Corners
Fold the bottom left and right corners of your square up so they meet at the center along the diagonal creases, creating a diamond shape.
Step 3: Fold Again
With both corners folded towards the center, take each corner again and fold them back outward so that the edges align with the outer edge of your original square. This creates two small flaps on each side of your diamond shape.
Step 4: Shape the Petals
Hold your paper so that there’s an opening at the bottom of your diamond shape. Apply a small amount of glue on one folded flap and fold it over onto the other flap. Press gently until the glue holds both flaps together. This creates a single petal of your kusudama flower.
Step 5: Create More Petals
Repeat steps 1 through 4 with the remaining four squares of paper to create a total of five petals.
Step 6: Assemble the Kusudama Flower
Apply glue to the sides of each petal and start joining them together. Be sure to glue the petals at their base, maintaining a connection with the inner points. After all petals are glued together, press gently and hold for a few seconds to ensure a strong bond. You’ve now created your very own kusudama flower!
For a more diverse look, try using different colors or patterns for each petal. You can also attach your completed kusudama flowers to string, ribbon, or thin wire to create a beautiful hanging display or centerpiece. Enjoy crafting these unique and elegant paper flowers!
