How to Make a Homemade Diaper
Whether you’re in a pinch or want to make a more sustainable diapering choice, homemade diapers can be an excellent alternative to store-bought ones. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of making a homemade diaper from materials that can be found around your home.
Materials Needed:
1. Soft fabric (preferably cotton, flannel, or terry cloth)
2. Absorbent fabric (microfiber towels, old baby blankets, or multiple layers of cotton fabric)
3. Scissors
4. A diaper pattern or template
5. Snaps, Velcro, or pins for fastening (optional)
6. Elastic bands or strips (optional)
Step 1: Choose and Prepare Your Fabric
First things first—select the right fabrics for your homemade diaper. Use a soft fabric, such as cotton flannel or terry cloth for the exterior, ensuring comfort for your baby. For absorbency, use microfiber towels or several layers of cotton fabric as the core material.
Pre-wash and dry your fabrics before cutting them to prevent shrinking later on.
Step 2: Find the Right Pattern/Template
Find a suitable pattern or template online that meets your requirements regarding size and fit. There are many free templates available for different age groups—choose one that suits your needs best.
Print out the selected pattern/template and cut it out.
Step 3: Cut Out the Diaper Pieces
Using the prepared pattern/template, cut out two pieces from the chosen exterior fabric and one piece from the absorbent material. Make sure to trace and cut accurately to ensure proper fitting.
Step 4: Assemble Your Diaper
Place the absorbent layer on top of one of the exterior pieces with its right side facing up. Next, place the other exterior piece on top with its right side facing down, so both right sides of the exterior fabric are touching each other. Pin the layers together.
Step 5: Sew the Diaper Edges
Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew along the edges of the pinned fabric, leaving an opening gap (~2 inches) to turn it right side out. After sewing, trim any excess fabric and snip the curves to prevent puckering.
Step 6: Add Enclosures & Elastic (optional)
Turn the diaper right side out through the opening gap and sew in snaps or attach Velcro for fastening. If you’d like to add elastic around the legs and waist, create a casing by folding over the edge and sewing a tunnel for elastic bands. Insert elastic and secure them with stitches.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Homemade Diaper
You’ve done it! Your homemade diaper is now ready for use. Stack these up and store them as needed—always wash between uses to ensure maximum cleanliness.
Whether for economic reasons or out of concern for environmental sustainability, making your homemade diapers can be rewarding. With time and practice, you can customize your designs to fit your family’s preferences perfectly!
