Step 1: Gather Materials

Before you start, gather all the necessary materials. You will need the following:

– A metal coat hanger

– A cardboard or foam board (about 18×12 inches)

– Aluminum foil

– A balun converter (also called a 75-to-300-ohm UHF/VHF matching transformer)

– Electrical tape

– Glue or adhesive (for attaching foil to the board)

– A pair of wire cutters and pliers

– Cable wires

Step 2: Prepare the Coat Hanger

Using wire cutters, cut off the hook from the coat hanger, and straighten it out completely using pliers. You can also use any thick wire for this purpose.

Step 3: Create the Antenna Elements

Bend your straightened coat hanger into a ‘V’ shape with an angle of about 120 degrees using your pliers. Create four of these elements in total.

Step 4: Attach Elements to the Board

Arrange your foam or cardboard board in landscape format. Place one of the ‘V’ shaped elements an inch from either end of the top edge of the board, allowing equal space between both ends. Attach these with electrical tape. Repeat this process, placing another two elements an inch from either end of the bottom edge of the board.

Step 5: Apply Aluminum Foil

Cut two rectangles made out of aluminum foil that are roughly half the size of your board each. Glue one rectangle onto each side of the elements, completely covering them and adhering them to the board.

Step 6: Attach Balun Converter

Now it is time to connect your elements to your balun converter. Look for a small round panel on one end with two screws holding it down. Unscrew those screws, and wrap each end of a ‘V’ shaped element around a screw. Be sure to wrap the top and bottom elements separately. Tighten the screws back in place to secure the connections.

Step 7: Connect Coaxial Cable

Screw your cable wire onto the balun converter. It’s important to use a cable that’s long enough to reach your TV from the antenna’s location.

Step 8: Test Your Antenna

Place your new HDTV antenna in an elevated position near a window, pointing towards local broadcast towers. Connect the coaxial cable to your TV, and scan for channels following your television’s instructions. Adjust the position of your antenna as necessary to improve reception.
