How to Make a Fabric Belt: 14 Steps
Step 1: Choose your fabric
Select a fabric that suits your needs and preferences. You can choose from various materials such as cotton, silk, or even synthetic blends. Consider the style, color, and pattern you want for your belt.
Step 2: Measure your waist
Wrap a measuring tape around your waist to determine the length of your belt. Ideally, the belt should be longer than your waist measurement so you can tie or fasten it comfortably.
Step 3: Add extra length
Add an extra 12-14 inches to the waist measurement to ensure there’s enough material for tying or buckling.
Step 4: Cut the fabric
Cut two strips of fabric according to the measurements obtained in steps 2 and 3. These strips will be sewn together to form the full length of your belt.
Step 5: Cut the interfacing
Cut one strip of fusible interfacing, an iron-on adhesive material used for reinforcement, with the same length as your fabric strips but half the width.
Step 6: Iron on the interfacing
Iron on the fusible interfacing to one side of one of your fabric strips. This will give your belt added structure and sturdiness.
Step 7: Align fabric strips
Place both fabric strips together with their right sides facing each other. Align them carefully so that all edges are matching.
Step 8: Sew down long edges
Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew down both long edges of the fabric strips using a straight stitch, leaving about a quarter-inch seam allowance. Leave both short ends open.
Step 9: Turn inside out
Turn the sewn fabric inside out so that the right side is now facing outward and press with an iron to give it a neat finish.
Step 10: Close the short ends
Turn in both short ends of the belt, pressing them flat with an iron. Sew along the folded edges to close them.
Step 11: Topstitch
Add a topstitch along both long edges of the belt, roughly 1/8 inch from the edge. This will keep the belt flat and neat.
Step 12: Choose a closure
Decide on a closure style for your belt, such as a buckle or Velcro. Attach it to one or both ends of your fabric belt according to your preference.
Step 13: Create belt loops (optional)
If you prefer, create loops for your belt by cutting small strips of fabric and sewing them onto the garment you’ll be wearing the belt with. You can also use ribbon or elastic to make these loops.
Step 14: Wear your new fabric belt
