The dizi, a bamboo flute with a rich history, is an essential instrument in traditional Chinese music. It is highly popular due to its versatility, expressiveness, and unique tonal characteristics. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your own dizi at home.

Materials and tools needed:

1. A piece of seasoned bamboo with a diameter of 2-3 cm (minimum length: 50 cm)

2. A sharp knife

3. Sandpaper (various grits)

4. Measuring tape or ruler

5. Drill with small bits (1-6 mm)

6. Glue (for fixing the membrane)

7. Natural membrane (rice paper or dimo)

Step 1 – Selecting the bamboo:

Choose a piece of straight, thick-walled, and evenly-sized bamboo without cracks or blemishes for your dizi. Seasoned bamboo is preferred as it ensures stability and longevity of the instrument.

Step 2 – Cutting and shaping:

Measure 45-48 cm from one end (depending on desired key) and cut the bamboo at that point using a saw or sharp knife. Be sure to keep your fingers away from the blade as you cut.
Hollow out any nodes within the open flute area carefully, so as not to damage the inner chamber of the flute.

Step 3 – Marking hole positions:

Using measuring tape or a ruler, mark six finger holes and one blowhole along the flute body according to standard fingering charts:

1st hole / Blowhole: Approx. 2 cm from closed end

Following intervals for fingering holes: Approx. 4 cm

Step 4 – Drilling finger holes and blowhole:

Using a drill with small bits (sized based on desired hole diameters), slowly and carefully drill the marked hole positions. Smooth the edges inside the holes using sandpaper.

Step 5 – Sanding:

Smooth the entire dizi flute using sandpaper, starting with a coarse grit and gradually moving to finer grits. Finish with a fine-grit sandpaper for a polished look.

Step 6 – Applying the membrane:

Moisten the natural membrane (rice paper or dimo) and apply it to the outer surface of the dizi, covering one of the finger holes. Allow it to air-dry until it becomes taut, then glue it securely in place.

Step 7 – Tuning:

To ensure that your homemade dizi plays in tune, compare its pitch with an electronic tuner or other reliable instrument playing at concert pitch (A4). You may need to adjust the position or size of the finger holes by sanding or drilling them differently based on your tuning reference.
