How to Make a Clutch Purse
A clutch purse is a versatile and stylish accessory that can elevate your outfit for any occasion. If you’re looking for a unique, personalized accessory or a fun project to try at home, making your own clutch purse is an excellent choice. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a beautiful and functional clutch purse from
scratch.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Fabric (main fabric, lining fabric, and any accent fabrics)
2. Interfacing (to provide structure to the purse)
3. Sewing machine or needle and thread
4. Scissors
5. Measuring tape or ruler
6. Fabric marker or chalk
7. Pins
8. Zipper (optional)
9. Button, snap, or other closure (optional)
Step 1: Choose Your Design
Before you begin sewing, decide on the size and shape of your clutch purse. You can find inspiration from browsing different styles online or sketch out an original design.
Step 2: Gather Your Materials
Once you have decided on your design, collect all the necessary materials mentioned above and choose fabrics that complement each other and match your style.
Step 3: Measure and Cut the Fabric Pieces
Measure and cut your main fabric, lining fabric, and interfacing according to your chosen design dimensions. Make sure all pieces are cut precisely for a polished final product.
Step 4: Assemble the Clutch Purse
Using the sewing machine or hand-stitching, sew the main fabric pieces together with right sides facing each other. If you’re adding a zipper or an accent piece like a ruffle or bow, be sure to sew these in place before sewing the main pieces together.
Next, sew your lining fabric pieces together in the same manner as the main fabric pieces.
If using interfacing, attach it to the main fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Attach the Lining to the Main Fabric
Turn the main fabric right side out, and then place it inside the lining with right sides facing together. Pin along the top edge, making sure to align any seams or edges perfectly.
Sew along the pinned edge, leaving a small opening (approximately 3 inches) to turn the purse right side out. Trim any excess fabric or corners for easier turning.
Step 6: Turn and Press the Clutch Purse
Carefully turn the purse right side out, pushing out all corners with a pointed object like a chopstick or pencil. Press all edges flat with an iron for a sharp look.
Step 7: Finish and Close the Opening
Hand-sew or machine-stitch the opening closed, ensuring that your stitches are neat and aligned with the rest of your clutch purse’s seams.
Step 8: Add Closure (Optional)
If desired, add a button, snap, or other closure to keep your clutch purse secure when in use.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created a stylish clutch purse that you can proudly show off on your next night out or at any special occasion. Enjoy your new accessory and don’t be surprised if you receive compliments on your handiwork!
