How to Make a Cafe Au Lait: 10 Steps

Cafe au lait is a popular and delicious French coffee drink made with equal parts of freshly brewed coffee and warm milk. The term “cafe au lait” literally means “coffee with milk” in French. It’s an easy beverage to make at home, and it only takes a few simple steps to prepare a perfect cup. Here’s how to make a cafe au lait in 10 easy steps:

1. Choose the right coffee: For an authentic cafe au lait, use a dark roast coffee, such as French roast or espresso roast. These blends have the bold flavor required to stand up to the creaminess of the milk.

2. Measure your coffee: Use two tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water. This will ensure that your coffee is strong enough without being overpowering.

3. Brew your coffee: You can use any brewing method you prefer, such as drip, pour-over, or French press. Just make sure to follow the brewing instructions for your chosen method.

4. Heat your milk: While your coffee is brewing, pour equal amounts of milk into a saucepan and heat it over low heat until it reaches a temperature of about 150°F (65°C). Be careful not to boil the milk, as doing so can cause it to develop a skin and become scalded.

5. Froth the milk: For a touch of luxury, froth your heated milk using a milk frother or by whisking it briskly.

6. Prepare your cups: Warm your serving cups by pouring hot water into them and letting them sit for a minute or two before emptying them.

7. Pour the brewed coffee: Carefully pour equal amounts of freshly brewed coffee into each cup, filling them halfway.

8. Add warmed milk: Slowly pour the warmed (and optionally frothed) milk into each cup, on top of the coffee. The proportion of coffee to milk should be 1:1, filling the cups completely.

9. Stir gently: Use a spoon to gently mix the coffee and milk in each cup, ensuring that they’re well combined.

10. Serve immediately: Enjoy your delicious cafe au lait right away. You can serve it as is or with a touch of sweetness by adding sugar or a flavored syrup.

In just 10 easy steps, you can create a luxurious and satisfying cafe au lait in the comfort of your own home. Enjoy this delectable beverage any time of day, whether it’s for your morning coffee or an evening treat.
