How to Kill a Mole: 13 Steps

Moles can be a real nuisance to your yard and garden, disrupting plantings and leaving unsightly mounds of dirt. If you’ve decided that killing the mole is your best recourse, follow these 13 steps to effectively eliminate these pesky creatures.

1. Identify the problem: Check for evidence of moles, such as raised molehills and feeding tunnels. Moles mainly create havoc in lawns, gardens, and agricultural fields.

2. Understand mole behavior: Moles are solitary creatures that primarily feed on insects and earthworms. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon during spring and fall.

3. Choose the right time: The best time for eliminating moles is during their active periods. This increases the chance of successfully targeting and killing them.

4. Locate active tunnels: Flatten molehills with your foot or a hand trowel and monitor for renewed activity over the next few days. Active tunnels will quickly show signs of repair.

5. Opt for lethal traps: There are various types of traps available for killing moles – scissor traps, harpoon traps, and choker loops, among others. Choose one that works best for your situation.

6. Set up the traps: Follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for setting up traps in active tunnels.

7. Use bait if necessary: Some mole traps require bait to lure moles towards them. Earthworms or grubs are excellent choices since they’re part of a mole’s favorite diet.

8. Monitor the traps daily: Check your traps regularly to see if you have caught any moles. Trapped moles should be removed promptly.

9. Respect local wildlife laws: Ensure that you follow any local regulations regarding trapping or killing animals in your jurisdiction.

10. Utilize an alternative method: If mole trapping isn’t successful, consider using other methods such as poisoned baits, grub eliminating chemicals, or gas cartridges to kill the moles.

11. Protect your plants: To minimize damage to your plants during mole extermination, consider fencing the area or using raised plant beds.

12. Maintain a healthy lawn and garden: Proper lawn maintenance reduces the attractiveness of your property to moles. Keep your yard clear of dead leaves, grass clippings, and excess mulch to discourage mole activity.

13. Monitor for new activity: After killing a mole, continue monitoring your yard for new signs of mole activity. Moles may move in from adjacent properties if food sources remain available. Employ preventive measures to safeguard against future infestations.

By following these 13 steps, you’ll be well on your way to eliminating moles and restoring the health and beauty of your yard and garden.
