How to Kick for Goal (Rugby): 8 Steps

Kicking for goal is a crucial skill in rugby that can potentially change the course of a game or lead your team to victory. While the process might seem simple, it requires proper technique, practice, and concentration. Here are eight steps for rugby players looking to improve their goal-kicking skills:

1. Select the right kicking tee: The perfect kicking tee ensures stability and allows you to strike the ball with better accuracy. Experiment with different types and heights to find one that suits your style and preference.

2. Set up your kicking spot: After choosing your tee, place it on the ground along with the ball at an angle that aligns with your target – usually between the middle and side of the goalposts. Make sure the area is clear, clean, and free from distractions.

3. Stand at a comfortable distance: Gauge how far away you should stand from the ball by taking a few small steps back and then around to create an angle from which you’ll approach the kick. The distance will vary depending on personal comfort and kicking style.

4. Establish your plant foot: The foot opposite of your kicking leg should be planted firmly on the ground, parallel or slightly ahead of the ball. This helps maintain balance during the kicking motion.

5. Align body and target: Keep your head down and eyes focused on an imaginary line that extends through your plant foot towards the target. This ensures proper alignment during the kicking motion.

6. Swing smoothly: Before taking off, establish momentum by rocking back slightly on your plant foot. This helps generate power in your swing. Kick through the ball using a smooth, controlled motion, contacting it with as much power and precision as possible.

7. Follow through with your swing: As you make contact with the ball, don’t immediately cut off your follow-through; instead, let it continue past where you struck the ball. This helps ensure better accuracy and distance.

8. Practice, practice, practice: The best way to become a more accurate and powerful goal kicker is through repetition. Dedicate time to refining your technique and constantly working on your timing, accuracy, and consistency.

By following these eight steps, you can significantly improve your skillset as a rugby goal kicker. Remember that it takes time, patience, and dedication to master the art of goal-kicking; but with consistent practice, you can become a valuable asset for your team on the field.
