How to Install Torch Down Roofing
Torch down roofing is a popular and durable choice for flat or low-slope roofs. Made from a combination of modified bitumen, fiberglass, and polyester, this material is known for its long-lasting performance and resistance to harsh weather conditions. If you’re considering installing torch down roofing on your building, this step-by-step guide will help you get the job done right.
1. Preparing the Roof
Before beginning the installation process, remove any old roofing materials and debris from the roof. Check for any damage to the roof deck that may need repair or replacement before proceeding. Ensure that the surface is free of moisture and clean.
2. Installing a Base Layer
Start by securing a base sheet to the roof deck using nails or screws with appropriate spacing depending on your location’s wind speed. The base sheet should cover the entire roof area, with seams overlapping by at least 3 inches (ca. 8 cm). Be cautious when installing near roof edges or at corners to make sure they are adequately covered.
3. Applying a Mid-Ply Sheet (Optional)
For added protection, you can install mid-ply sheets between the base layer and top layer—although not a necessity in all cases. Just like the base sheet installation, overlap these sheets’ seams by at least 3 inches, ensuring proper coverage across the entire roof area.
4. Installing the Torch Down Membrane
Now it’s time to install your torch down membrane. Start by unrolling and aligning it parallel to your roof edge at one end of your roof’s surface—the ideal starting point can be either your lowest point or furthest corner from your entrance point.
Next, fold back half of the membrane lengthwise to expose its underside (the side with adhesion). Using your torch, heat both the exposed underside of the membrane and an area of underlying mid-ply or base sheet. Ensure they reach the appropriate temperature before fusing the surfaces. Then carefully press the heated surfaces together, creating a solid bond as you go.
5. Overlapping Seams
Install additional rolls of the torch down membrane by making sure the seams overlap by at least 3 inches. Use your torch to heat through both layers and press them together, creating an airtight seal.
6. Finishing Touches
After completing the membrane installation, inspect your roof to ensure there are no unsealed edges or areas. Apply flashing around roof penetrations like vents, chimneys, or pipes by cutting pieces of the torch down roofing material and using a roofing adhesive to adhere it around these penetrations.
7. Safety Precautions
Remember that you will be using a torch for this installation process; take all necessary safetyprecautions during the process:
– Wear suitable protective clothing such as gloves, goggles, and closed-toe shoes.
– Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
– Avoid working on windy days when open flames can be hazardous.
– Take breaks frequently to avoid exhaustion and maintain focus.
By following this guide, you’ll be well on your way to installing a long-lasting and durable torch down roofing system for your building. Ensure everything is done correctly and do not hesitate to seek professional help if needed.
