Constructing a sturdy, well-supported deck requires proper planning and installation of deck piers. Deck piers serve as the foundation for your deck, providing a stable base that won’t shift or collapse due to weather and time. This guide will walk you through the process of installing deck piers so you can build a strong and durable outdoor living space.

Step 1: Plan Your Deck

Before installation begins, carefully plan out your deck design, taking into consideration the size, shape, and materials you plan to use. Make sure to follow local building codes and obtain any necessary permits.

Step 2: Mark the Location

Using chalk or spray paint, mark the location of your deck on the ground where you will be installing the piers. Make sure the area is level and free of debris.

Step 3: Determine Pier Spacing

Check your local building code for required pier spacing. Generally, piers should be spaced no more than 8 feet apart along the length of the joists and no more than 6 feet apart along the width.

Step 4: Dig Holes for Piers

Use a post hole digger or an auger to dig holes for the piers at each marked location. The depth of these holes should extend below the frost line in your area to prevent movement caused by freezing and thawing. Refer to local building codes for specific depth requirements.

Step 5: Prepare Concrete Footings

Mix enough concrete to fill each hole according to the package instructions, then pour it into each hole until it’s about six inches from the top. Insert a rebar piece vertically in each hole for added stability.

Step 6: Install Deck Pier Forms

Place pre-fabricated plastic or cardboard deck pier forms into each hole filled with concrete, ensuring that they’re secured in place by resting on top of the rebar. Adjust the forms to the correct height and ensure they are level with each other.

Step 7: Pour Concrete into Pier Forms

Fill each pier form with concrete to the top, taking care to eliminate air pockets and voids by tapping the sides of each form. Smooth out the top surface of each pier using a trowel.

Step 8: Install Post Anchors

While the concrete is still wet, place heavy-duty metal post anchors into each pier. Make sure they’re centered and facing the right direction before sinking them into the concrete.

Step 9: Allow Concrete to Set

Allow the concrete to set and cure according to manufacturer recommendations. This typically takes between 24 and 72 hours.

Step 10: Build Your Deck

Once the concrete has fully cured, you’re ready to build your deck on top of your newly installed piers! Follow your deck plans to construct a safe, sturdy, and long-lasting outdoor living space.

By carefully following these steps, you can ensure proper installation of deck piers for a strong foundation that supports your dream outdoor living space. With quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, your deck will provide years of enjoyment and relaxation.
