How to Install a Toilet
Installing a new toilet is a straightforward process that most homeowners can tackle on their own. With some basic tools and preparation, you can complete this project in just a few hours. This article outlines the steps to successfully install a toilet in your home.
1. Gather Tools and Materials
Before beginning the installation process, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. This includes:
– A new toilet
– Wax ring or alternative sealing method
– Toilet bolts
– Adjustable wrench or channel lock pliers
– Level
– Plunger (optional)
– Bucket or old towel (to catch any water during removal of old toilet)
2. Prepare for Installation
First, turn off the water supply to your toilet by closing the shut-off valve located behind or beside your toilet. Flush the toilet to drain any remaining water and then disconnect the water supply hose from the tank using an adjustable wrench.
3. Remove Old Toilet
Use an adjustable wrench or channel lock pliers to remove the nuts securing your old toilet to the floor. Gently rock the toilet back and forth, lifting it off the bolts to expose the wax ring. Use a putty knife to scrape away any residual wax from the flange and surrounding floor area.
4. Prepares Flange for New Toilet
Check the flange for damage or corrosion and repair or replace it if necessary before proceeding with installation. Place new bolts in the slots of your flange, aligning them with rough-in measurements specific to your chosen model of toilet (usually 12 inches from finished wall).
5. Install Wax Ring on New Toilet
Place the wax ring around the hole in your toilet’s base, ensuring that it creates a tight seal against potential leaks. You may also use alternatives like rubber sealing gaskets if preferred.
6. Set New Toilet
Carefully lower your new toilet onto the flange, aligning the mounting holes with the bolts. Press the toilet down firmly and evenly to compress the wax ring and create a watertight seal. Make sure to keep the toilet level and make any necessary adjustments before tightening.
7. Secure Toilet and Attach Tank
Place a washer onto each bolt, followed by a nut. Hand-tighten them first, then gently secure them with an adjustable wrench or channel lock pliers – be careful not to over-tighten as it can crack your toilet’s base. Follow manufacturer instructions for attaching and securing your toilet tank.
8. Reconnect Water Supply and Test Flush
Reattach the water supply line to your new toilet, ensuring a snug connection. Turn on the water supply valve and allow your tank to fill up. Check for any leaks around the base or connections – if you spot any, try re-tightening connections or adjusting your wax ring placement.
Once you’re satisfied with leak-free connections, perform a test flush to ensure proper function. If everything is in working order, place the toilet seat according to manufacturer instructions – and congratulations, you’ve successfully installed a new toilet!
