How to Home Tan: 14 Steps

Tanning at home can be an affordable and convenient alternative to visiting a tanning salon. By following the right steps and using quality products, you can achieve a beautiful, natural-looking tan from the comfort of your own home. Here are 14 steps to help you get started:

1. Exfoliate: Before tanning, it’s essential to exfoliate your skin using an exfoliating glove or a scrub. This process will remove dead skin cells and provide an even surface for your tan to adhere to.

2. Moisturize: Apply a light moisturizer on dry areas, such as elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists, to avoid excess absorption of tanning products.

3. Choose the right tanning product: Research different types of self-tanners – lotions, mousses or sprays – and select one that matches your desired tan shade.

4. Perform a patch test: Test the product on a small area of skin before applying it to your entire body. This will help you check for any allergic reactions and ensure the shade is right for you.

5. Protect your hands: Wear gloves or a self-tanning mitt when applying the product to prevent staining your hands.

6. Start from the feet up: Begin applying the self-tanner from your feet and work upwards in sections.

7. Use light strokes: Apply the product using long, smooth strokes to ensure an even application.

8. Don’t overuse the product: Be mindful of how much tanner you use; it’s better to apply lighter layers than too much at once.

9. Pay attention to tricky areas: Spend extra time blending the product into areas such as knees, ankles, elbows and wrists.

10. Wait for the product to dry: Let the self-tanner fully dry before getting dressed or coming into contact with surfaces – usually between 10-20 minutes.

11. Avoid sweating or contact with water: Wait at least four hours (or the duration recommended by the product) before showering, swimming or exercising to allow the tan to fully develop.

12. Maintain your tan: Gently exfoliate your skin every few days and apply a moisturizer daily to keep your tan looking smooth and even.

13. Opt for gradual tanning products: If you want to maintain a consistent tan, use a gradual tanning lotion or mousse. These products are designed for daily use and will help prolong your sun-kissed glow.

14. Practice sun safety: Remember, most self-tanners do not provide sun protection. Be sure to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 before stepping out into the sun.

By following these 14 steps, you can achieve a beautiful and natural-looking tan at home without the need for expensive salon visits. Happy tanning!
