How to Harvest Lavender: 11 Steps

Lavender is a versatile, fragrant plant known for its lovely aroma and striking purple flowers. If you’re looking to harvest your homegrown lavender, follow these 11 steps to ensure that you get the most out of your plant.

1. Timing is key: The best time to harvest lavender is when approximately 50% of the flower buds have opened. This period will allow you to enjoy both the aesthetic appeal of the flowers and their potent fragrance.

2. Select the right tools: To properly harvest lavender, use a pair of sharp pruning shears or scissors and a basket or tray to collect the stems. Dull tools can damage the plant, making it more susceptible to disease.

3. Prepare for harvest: Put on gloves to protect your hands as lavender oil can be potent. If you’re highly sensitive, consider wearing long sleeves.

4. Identify which stems to cut: Look for long, healthy stems with open buds and free from disease or damage.

5. Make clean cuts: Cut the stems just above a set of leaves, ensuring that you leave a few inches of green growth on the plant. This will allow for new growth after harvest.

6. Gather individual bundles: As you cut your lavender stems, arrange them in small bundles – around 50-100 stems per bundle.

7. Secure each bundle: Use a rubber band or twine to tie each bundle together securely below the flower heads.

8. Prepare for drying: Find a well-ventilated area with low humidity and out of direct sunlight. Attics, garages or even closets can work well for this if there is proper airflow.

9. Hang the bundles: Use twine or string to hang each bundle upside down, allowing sufficient space between them for optimum airflow.

10. Wait patiently: Allow your lavender bundles to dry for approximately 2-4 weeks until they feel crisp to the touch. The actual time may vary depending on your drying environment.

11. Preserve your harvest: Once your lavender is completely dry, store it in an airtight container away from direct sunlight to help prolong its vibrant color and aroma.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to harvesting and preserving your beautiful lavender in a way that gives you the maximum benefits of this versatile plant. Whether you use it for crafts, cooking or just enjoying its soothing fragrance, harvested lavender adds a personal, delightful touch to your home.
