How to Hang a Treestand
Hunting from an elevated position can provide numerous advantages, such as improved visibility, a greater range of shooting angles, and the ability to stay hidden from your quarry. One popular means of achieving this vantage point is by using a treestand. In this article, we will walk you through the process of hanging a treestand safely and effectively.
Step 1: Choose the right tree
Selecting the right tree is crucial for both your safety and hunting success. The tree should be strong, healthy, and free of rot or damage. It should also be straight and have a diameter larger than the minimum recommended by your treestand manufacturer—usually around 8-12 inches.
Step 2: Gather your equipment
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary equipment:
– Treestand (ladder stand, climbing stand, or hang-on stand)
– Safety harness
– Tree strap or lineman’s belt
– Rope or ratchet straps to secure the treestand
– Haul line for hoisting gear
Step 3: Put on your safety harness
Safety should always come first when installing a treestand. Wear a full-body safety harness that secures around your waist, legs, and shoulders.
Step 4: Secure a tree strap or lineman’s belt
Attach a tree strap or lineman’s belt around the tree at approximately chest height. This provides added safety as you work on installing your stand.
Step 5: Attach the treestand to the tree
Depending on your chosen treestand style, follow these guidelines:
A) Ladder Stand:
– Have a partner hold the base of the ladder while you lift it into position against the tree.
– Ensure that the top section of the ladder is properly seated against the trunk, with support bars in place if included.
– Secure the ladder to the tree with the provided rope or ratcheting straps.
B) Climbing Stand:
– Separate the top and bottom sections of the climber.
– Attach the top section around the tree at your desired height, ensuring that it is stable and level.
– Position the bottom section a few inches above the ground, and secure it firmly around the tree.
C) Hang-On Stand:
– Climb up using climbing sticks or a separate climbing aid, securing each step to the tree as you go.
– Attach your hang-on stand at your desired height using ratchet or rope straps.
Step 6: Ensure a stable platform
Before stepping onto your treestand, double-check that all parts are secure and locked in place. Give the platform a test by putting weight on it while still safely secured to the lineman’s belt or tree strap.
Step 7: Attach a safety line or lifeline
A safety line or lifeline is essential for preventing falls while ascending and descending from your treestand. Starting at ground level, attach one end of the safety line to the base of your tree. Then, while still wearing your safety harness, attach yourself to the other end and slide it up as you climb. Secure the line near your stand once you reach your desired height.
Step 8: Hoist your gear
Never attempt to climb with equipment in hand. Instead, use a haul line to bring your bow, gun, and other gear up once you’re safely secured in your treestand.
With these steps completed, you’ll be ready to enjoy an elevated hunting experience from your safely installed treestand. Remember always to prioritize safety when using any elevated hunting platform.
