1.Reflect on the situation: Before addressing the issue, take a step back and evaluate your relationship with your boss. Are they difficult with everyone, or is it specific to your interactions? Identify the main issues causing strain in your working relationship.

2.Keep emotions in check: When dealing with a difficult boss, it’s essential to stay calm and professional. Letting your emotions get the best of you will only escalate the situation and make matters worse.

3.Maintain open communication: Discuss concerns and issues openly and honestly with your boss. This will allow you both to better understand each other’s perspectives while working towards an improved relationship.

4.Document incidents: Whenever you encounter challenging situations or conversations with your boss, make a note of the details, including date, time, and what occurred. This documentation can serve as evidence should any future issues arise.

5.Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries on what you consider acceptable behavior and let your boss know in a professional manner if they cross those boundaries.

6.Seek advice from colleagues: Speaking with coworkers about their experiences dealing with similar difficulties can offer valuable insights and suggestions for managing the situation.

7.Stay professional: Even if your boss is less-than-ideal, maintain professionalism at all times in your interactions and work performance.

8.Focus on what you can control: You may not be able to change your boss’s behavior – but you can control how you react to it. Concentrate on remaining composed, resilient, and diligent in your work.

9.Develop coping strategies: Find effective ways to manage stress and tension related to challenging work relationships, such as exercise, meditation, or seeking support from friends and family.

10.Seek human resources support: If necessary, consult with a human resources representative about any inappropriate or harmful behavior demonstrated by your difficult boss.

11.Consider approaching higher-ups: In cases of severe difficulty with your boss, it may be appropriate to reach out to their supervisor to discuss your concerns.

12.Establish mutual goals: Align your objectives with those of your boss. By working towards common goals, you create a shared interest in the well-being of the team and improve the overall work environment.

13.Be empathetic: Try to see things from your boss’s perspective. They may be dealing with personal or professional stressors that can contribute to their difficult behavior.

14.Know when it’s time to move on: If you’ve tried several strategies and there is no improvement in your working relationship, it might be time to seek alternative employment opportunities.

By following these 14 steps, you can better navigate your interactions with a difficult boss and create a more positive work environment for yourself and your colleagues.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
