How to Give Yourself a Fade: 15 Steps

A fade hairstyle is not only a stylish choice but also an excellent way to show off your haircut skills. With the right tools and techniques, giving yourself a fade can be done in the comfort of your home. Here are 15 steps to help you achieve the perfect fade.

1. Gather your tools: To give yourself a fade, you’ll need a hair clipper with multiple guards, scissors, a comb, a handheld mirror, and some styling product for the finishing touches.

2. Choose your fade style: Fades come in various styles – low, mid, high, skin, or tapered – so decide which look you’re going for before getting started.

3. Wash and dry your hair: Clean and dry hair will be more manageable during the cutting process.

4. Comb your hair: Comb through your hair to remove any tangles and ensure it’s lying flat.

5. Start with a larger guard: Begin by attaching the longest guard to your clipper. For most fades, this will be around #4 or #5 guard.

6. Cut the top of your head: With the longest guard attached, start by trimming the hair on top of your head down to an even length. Follow the natural shape of your head as you cut.

7. Set your baseline for the fade: Decide where you want your fade to start – at the temples for a high fade or below that if you prefer a lower one – and mark it visually using your comb.

8. Attach a shorter guard: Switch to a shorter guard, usually #1 or #2, for the sides and back of your head.

9. Start cutting below the baseline: Begin trimming your hair below the determined baseline using upward strokes. You should be left with distinctly shorter hair compared to what’s on top.

10. Blend different lengths using transitional guards: Working between your baseline and shortest point, utilize guards between #2 and #4 to gradually create a smooth transition in hair length.

11. Use the clipper-over-comb technique: To help blend the hair even further, hold your comb at a diagonal angle against your head and then use the clipper to trim any hairs protruding from the teeth.

12. Check for inconsistencies: Using your handheld mirror, inspect your fade for any unevenness or harsh lines. Touch up where necessary with the appropriate guard on your clipper.

13. Finishing touches: For a skin fade, remove the guard and use your clipper’s blades to shave the hairs around your ears and below your hairline.

14. Clean up the edges: To give yourself that professional salon finish, tidy up any stray hairs around your ears, neckline, and sideburns using a trimmer or a pair of sharp scissors.

15. Style your hair: Apply some styling product to your freshly cut hair to enhance its texture and keep it looking great throughout the day.

And there you have it! While giving yourself a fade haircut may be challenging at first, with patience, practice, and these 15 steps, you’ll soon be able to achieve that professional-looking fade right at home.
