Hornets are not only unwelcome guests in our gardens and homes but also pose a threat to people due to their painful stings. If you have a hornet problem, use these 13 steps to help you safely and effectively get rid of them.

1. Identify the nest: The first step in getting rid of hornets is to locate their nest. This is typically found hanging from trees, shrubs, eaves, or other structures. Be cautious when approaching the nest.

2. Choose the right time: The best time to deal with hornets is early morning or late evening when they are less active.

3. Dress appropriately: Wear protective clothing, including long sleeves, pants and gloves. A hat or hood with a veil can also shield your face from potential stings.

4. Keep children and pets away: Ensure that kids and animals stay indoors while you’re handling the hornet problem to prevent them from being stung.

5. Use insecticide: Choose a commercial insecticide specifically designed for hornets and follow the instructions on the label.

6. Spray at night: Hornets are less likely to be active at night, making it safer to spray insecticides on the nest.

7. Hold your distance: When spraying the insecticide, maintain a safe distance of at least 6-10 feet away from the nest.

8. Keep an eye on activity levels: Monitor the nest for several days after spraying to ensure all hornets have been killed or driven away.

9. Seal up entry points: If you find that hornets are nesting within your home, seal up any potential entry points right after applying insecticides to reduce the chance of reinfestation.

10. Trap and bait: Another option for smaller infestations is using traps with bait – commercially available or homemade – to lure hornets into a container from which they cannot escape.

11. Call a professional: If you’re dealing with a large infestation or are uncomfortable handling hornets yourself, hire an expert to handle the situation safely and effectively.

12. Eliminate potential nest sites: Keep your property free of debris and clutter that could act as a potential nesting site for hornets.

Regularly check your property for signs of new hornet nests and address any issues as soon as they arise.

By following these steps, you can effectively get rid of hornets, protecting your family and home from these unwelcome visitors. Remember that safety is your top priority and never hesitate to call in the professionals if you don’t feel comfortable tackling the problem on your own.
