How to Get Lice Off Clothes: 6 Steps

Getting rid of lice from clothes is just as important as treating the scalp. Although lice cannot survive for long away from the human scalp, they might still crawl onto your clothes, bedding, and other personal items. Here are six steps to effectively get rid of lice off your clothes.

1. Separate Infested Items:

Collect all the clothing items that have been in direct contact with the infested person within the past 48 hours. This includes shirts, pants, hats, scarves, and any other garments that may have come into contact with the lice. Do not mix these items with other clothing.

2. Use Hot Water for Washing:

Wash the infested clothes in hot water at a temperature of at least 130°F (54°C). This will kill any active lice and nits present on the clothing items. Make sure to use a detergent that can handle high temperatures without damaging your clothes.

3. Dry on High Heat:

After washing, dry the clothes on high heat for at least 45 minutes. The high temperature will further help kill any remaining lice or nits that may have survived the washing process.

4. Seal Non-Washable Items:

For items that can’t be washed or dried, like stuffed animals or delicate garments, seal them in a plastic bag for two weeks. This will ensure any surviving lice or nits die from lack of access to a human host.

5. Vacuum Surfaces:

To remove any potentially fallen lice from your home, vacuum all surfaces including floors, carpets, couches, and other furniture where infested clothing might have been lying around. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag or empty its contents carefully outside of your home.

6. Clean Other Personal Items:

Don’t forget about combs, brushes, and hair accessories that have touched an infested scalp. Soak these items in hot water or rubbing alcohol for at least 10 minutes to kill any lingering lice.

By following these six steps, you can effectively get rid of lice from your clothes and prevent further spread of the infestation. Remember to frequently check all family members for any signs of lice and maintain good hygiene practices to avoid future infestations.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
