1. Research the field: Before you start, it’s crucial to understand what graphic design is and the range of industries it encompasses, from print to digital media.

2. Set clear goals: Determine what you want to achieve as a graphic designer, whether it’s working as a freelancer, being part-owner in a design firm or working in-house for an organization.

3. Get educated:Enroll in a graphic design program – online or in-person – to learn the basics of design principles, color theory, typography, and other essential skills.

4. Learn the software: Master industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other design software, such as Sketch and Figma.

5. Develop your personal style: As you learn techniques and tools, experiment to find your own unique artistic approach that sets you apart from other designers.

6. Work on projects for practice: Create fictitious projects or replicate real-world designs to help build your portfolio, showcasing your skills and style.

7. Network with professionals: Attend networking events, conferences, seminars, and online communities to make connections with other designers and potential clients.

8. Seek internships or freelance work: Gain professional experience by interning at a design firm or freelancing for clients to hone your skills on real-world projects.

9. Build an online presence: Create a professional website showcasing your portfolio and including contact details so potential clients can easily reach out to you.

10. Gather testimonials: Request feedback from satisfied clients or employers for testimonials that can be used in marketing materials and on your website to attract new business.

11. Continue learning: Keep up with emerging trends and new software by taking workshops or courses regularly – this will help you stay competitive in the industry.

12. Learn complementary skills: Study related fields like marketing or programming to diversify your skillset and enhance your marketability.

13. Keep track of your achievements: Document successful projects and awards to showcase your talent and attract potential clients or employers.

14. Create a strong resume: Summarize your education, achievements, experience, and unique design style in a well-formatted resume that effectively markets your skills.

15. Apply for jobs or pitch to clients: Reach out to companies seeking graphic designers, or promote your services to potential clients through effective marketing strategies like social media, email campaigns, and networking events.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
