How to Get a Sick Dog to Drink: 9 Steps

If your canine companion is sick, ensuring they stay hydrated is crucial for their recovery. However, a sick dog may not be as eager to drink as usual. Here are nine steps you can take to encourage your sick dog to stay hydrated.

1. Choose the right bowl: Use a clean, shallow container that is easy for your dog to access. Make sure the bowl doesn’t tip over easily and is designed specifically for dogs with low sides.

2. Keep the water fresh: Replace the water in your dog’s bowl regularly throughout the day. Dogs are more likely to drink clean, fresh water compared to water that has been sitting out for hours.

3. Encourage frequent drinking: Offer your dog water frequently throughout the day, at least every 2-3 hours. This ensures they have plenty of opportunities to drink and stay hydrated.

4. Add flavor: Mix in small amounts of low-sodium chicken or beef broth with their water. The added flavor can entice your sick dog to drink more than usual.

5. Use ice cubes: Some dogs enjoy playing with and chewing on ice cubes, which can help keep them hydrated. You can also create flavored ice cubes by freezing low-sodium broth or water mixed with a little bit of unsweetened fruit juice.

6. Offer wet food: If your sick dog is willing to eat, mix some canned or wet food with water to create a soupy consistency. This will help increase their daily fluid intake.

7. Keep them cool: If your dog is uncomfortable due to fever or inflammation, keeping them cool and comfortable can encourage them to drink water. Provide a cool resting area and use fans or air conditioning.

8. Hydration with a syringe: In cases where your dog refuses to drink on their own, consult with your veterinarian about using a needleless syringe or turkey baster to gently squirt water into their mouth. This should be a last resort and done carefully to avoid aspiration.

9. Consult with your veterinarian: If your dog continues to refuse drinking water or is showing signs of severe dehydration like sunken eyes, dry gums, or lethargy, consult with your veterinarian immediately. Your dog may require medical intervention such as IV fluids for adequate hydration.

By following these nine steps, you can help encourage your sick dog to drink water and support their recovery process. Always remain patient and attentive to your dog’s needs as they recover from illness.
