How to Fold an Origami Duck: 11 Steps

Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, has been practiced for centuries. One popular design is the origami duck. With just a few simple folds, you can transform a square piece of paper into a beautiful and elegant duck. In this article, we will guide you through the process in 11 easy steps.

Step 1: Choose Your Paper

Select a square piece of origami paper for your duck. We recommend starting with a paper size of at least 6 inches by 6 inches (15 cm x 15 cm). This will make it easier to fold and create clean lines.

Step 2: Create a Diagonal Crease

Fold the square paper in half diagonally, creating a triangle shape. Be sure to align the edges of the paper before making the crease.

Step 3: Two Smaller Triangles

Fold the bottom corners of the triangle up to meet the top corner, forming two smaller triangles. The folded edges should be parallel to each other.

Step 4: Petal Folds

Beginning with one of the smaller triangles, fold the top layer down so that its tip meets the centerline where both smaller triangles meet. Then, repeat this fold on the other smaller triangle. These folds are called “petal folds.”

Step 5: Forming the Body

Rotate your model so that one petal fold is facing you and fold it back along its base (the edge where it meets the larger triangle) towards you. Flatten it down to form a diamond shape on top of the larger triangle, creating a new central crease.

Step 6: Head and Tail Formation

Now, take note of which side will be your duck’s head and which one will be its tail. Fold each half separately towards its opposite side along central creases. Make sure not to overlap these folded halves.

Step 7: Tail Adjustment

Fold the tail slightly upward and to the side, creating a slight angle for the duck’s tail. This will give your origami duck a more realistic appearance.

Step 8: Neck Fold

For the duck’s neck, make a mountain fold (a fold with the peak facing up) at an angle, starting from the middle of the head side toward the bottom edge of the body.

Step 9: Head Crease

Create an inward (valley) fold on the head part that emerges from the neck fold. This will shape your origami duck’s head and beak.

Step 10: Stand Up Your Duck

Open the base of your origami duck by slightly folding it outward and pressing down on its lower body part. This will create a 3D effect and allow your duck to stand up.

Step 11: Final Touches

Gently adjust and tweak each fold, making sure everything is symmetrical and well-formed. You can also add details like eyes or patterns using markers or pens if desired.

Congratulations! You have now successfully folded an origami duck in just 11 steps. With practice, you’ll be able to create other beautiful origami animals and hone your paper folding skills even further. Enjoy your new origami duck as a decoration or share it with friends and family as a unique, handcrafted gift.
