Have you ever encountered the error message that says “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable” while trying to access your files or folders? This can be an annoying and frustrating ordeal, especially if the affected files contain important data. However, this issue can be resolved with a few simple steps.

1. Check for Disk Errors

This error message can be attributed to corrupt or damaged files caused by disk errors. Therefore, the first step to fixing the problem is to check for disk errors in your computer. A disk error check can be done using the CHKDSK command in Command Prompt. To do this, follow these steps:

i. Press the Windows key + X and click on the Command Prompt (Admin) option.

ii. Type “chkdsk C: /f /r” and hit Enter (replace “C” with the drive letter of the affected drive).

iii. Press Y and hit Enter to confirm the scan and restart your computer.

2. Run a Check Disk Scan

If the disk error check does not fix the issue, you can try running a Check Disk scan on the affected drive. This command scans the drive for errors and attempts to fix them.

i. Open File Explorer and right-click on the affected drive.

ii. Click on Properties and select the Tools tab.

iii. Click on the Check button under the Error Checking section.

iv. Follow the prompts to initiate the scan and wait for it to complete.

3. Repair Using Third-Party Software

If the first two steps do not work, you can try repairing the affected files or folders using third-party software. There are numerous options available, including EaseUS Data Recovery, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, and Recuva. These software tools are designed to recover and repair files affected by various errors, including the “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.”

4. Format the Drive

If all else fails, formatting the affected drive may be the only option left. However, this should only be done as a last resort, as formatting erases all the data on the drive. To avoid losing your data, you can try to recover your files using any of the third-party software mentioned above before formatting the drive.

In conclusion, encountering the error message “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable” can be a frustrating experience. However, by following the above-mentioned steps, you should be able to fix the problem in no time. Always remember to back up important data regularly to avoid data loss in the future.
